IE7 messin with me, watch out guys

Hi guys,

I know maybe some of you know about this, but watch out for IE7 and your folding. I was wondering why my internet connection kept freezing up the last few days (for all rigs), the only way I could fix it, was to either disable the network connection (on one or more rigs) and enable it again, or to cycle power on the router or cablemodem. The problem always soon returned though.

Well, before I even went to the software side of things, I had been wanting a wireless router anyway, so I bought one, didn't fix it. Also ruled out the cablemodem, tried new drivers for my onboard marvell nic's, threw in an old 3com 100 card I had. Hardware wasn't fixing it.

Then I heard about IE7 possibly screwing with folding. NOTE: This only applies if you chose the "use Internet explorer settings" option, and I use the console version 5.04 btw on all my cores. I had just upgraded to IE7, but didn't seem to notice any adverse affects right away, so I didn't suspect it or folding right away. So I redid my settings and this time chose no, for the use internet explorer settings option. Problem seems to be solved, now both rigs, and all four cores at 100% all the time, and no more internet locking up either so far.

Basically though, this has been wreaking a little havoc on my folding production lately. Sometimes I look at my cpu utilization lately, and only 1 core is folding, or none, because it can't send out done work or get new stuff either it seems. So the cores just sit there, cause IE7 won't let it go out and they have nothing to do. Then I do the temporary fix by disabling/enabling internet, they send out their stuff and start working again, but the problem comes back very soon. I've been getting WU's out the door, but this has been slowing me down.

So if you have IE7 now, and console version fah with use IE settings option enabled, and your internet has been tweakin, this could be why. Disable this option, and it should fix it.

Thats Funny. I haqve never Experienced this personally...Thats when i folded more however...Doesnt seem to be happening though now.

Thanks for the headsup.
This only happened after the new IE7, it never did it with IE6. I just always chose the use IE settings option to yes in fah console, and never had a problem.

So it's a problem I think people will only see with that combo together- the new IE7 is installed, and they have chosen yes for the use IE settings option.

I'm glad it's working for you enterprise, maybe I'm in the minority here. Hopefully this helps someone who does have this issue like me

It doesn't matter what web browser you use, it is a matter of what settings you used when you installed folding. Like he said above, if your computer has IE7 installed (I don't care if you use it or not) and you chose yes when setting up folding for the question to use IE settings then you will run into trouble until M$ fixes. Go to the folding forums on the folding website and this is a old problem dating back to the beta for IE7. M$ even knows about the problem. Just choose no for the settings question and then it will ask you about a proxy and tell it no then (unless you are behind a proxy)

I wonder if this problem is what was causing our daily average, as a whole, to drop? I know we were up to 80,000-90,000 points on average for a while then we dropped down to 50,000-60,000 right around the time the actual release of IE7. Hopefully everyone running IE7 will see this post and fix the problem so we can get our numbers back up.

This is exactly why I posted this, in hopes it will get some people to check and make sure their rig/s is actually folding. And to save them the troubleshooting hassle if their problem is as bad as mine was. Personally, it was also locking up my whole network, but maybe some people don't get the problem so severe, I don't know. But I could see maybe some people who don't really monitor their folding, to have a WU stuck there for who knows how long, and not even know it maybe. I don't know how many people enable this setting though, I've always used it before, and no prob until IE7.

Still working great though after disabling that setting. Said no to use internet explorer settings, and no for proxy, both rigs been working solid so far since, and my network has yet to freeze again. All four cores goin good now again, I should break top 25 soon.
