Hi guys,
I know maybe some of you know about this, but watch out for IE7 and your folding. I was wondering why my internet connection kept freezing up the last few days (for all rigs), the only way I could fix it, was to either disable the network connection (on one or more rigs) and enable it again, or to cycle power on the router or cablemodem. The problem always soon returned though.
Well, before I even went to the software side of things, I had been wanting a wireless router anyway, so I bought one, didn't fix it. Also ruled out the cablemodem, tried new drivers for my onboard marvell nic's, threw in an old 3com 100 card I had. Hardware wasn't fixing it.
Then I heard about IE7 possibly screwing with folding.
NOTE: This only applies if you chose the "use Internet explorer settings" option, and I use the
console version 5.04 btw on all my cores. I had just upgraded to IE7, but didn't seem to notice any adverse affects right away, so I didn't suspect it or folding right away. So I redid my settings and this time chose
no, for the use internet explorer settings option. Problem seems to be solved, now both rigs, and all four cores at 100% all the time, and no more internet locking up either so far.
Basically though, this has been wreaking a little havoc on my folding production lately. Sometimes I look at my cpu utilization lately, and only 1 core is folding, or none, because it can't send out done work or get new stuff either it seems. So the cores just sit there, cause IE7 won't let it go out and they have nothing to do. Then I do the temporary fix by disabling/enabling internet, they send out their stuff and start working again, but the problem comes back very soon. I've been getting WU's out the door, but this has been slowing me down.
So if you have IE7 now, and console version fah with use IE settings option enabled, and your internet has been tweakin, this could be why. Disable this option, and it should fix it.
