ok so i was really bored and had my sempron 3000 64 bit laying around, a few days ago i decided to lap the ihs, which went fine:

then i thought hey, i think ill take the ihs off and replace the thermal paste with AS5
, nice idea at the time, and so the ihs came off....the silicon world in all its glory:

OH NO WAIT, what are these lil chips on my lap....MY CPU IS F&!%$!

Before anyone starts crying and mourning over the dead cpu...it was just sitting around and wasnt being used....but now i do feel a bit gutted because it was a socket 939 and if for some reason my 3200 failed i always had a backup, well not anymore...oh well so is life..........
and to think i was going to do this to my athlon 3200.

Dude... I would have bought that from you. Shame
At least burn them--breaking them from some sort of OCD fit is reprehensible--nice lapping job though...
IHS removal is a potentially dangerous process. Besides, the sempron isn't 939. They're only socket A or socket 754 for 64-bit.
You have tried it to make sure it doesn't work? My laptop CPU has one of those little chips damaged and it work just fine

no i havnt tried it yet, but its not an issue of the chip being damaged, its an issue of the chip even being there.....which in this case its just not there anymore, 2 chips to be precise

Give it a try still, I saw a thread where a guy managed to chop off 5 of those on an opteron and it still ran!

I have broken those little chips before on Intel CPUs (cracked them in half in fact) and the CPUs have worked just fine.

Give your CPU a try before condemning it to bin, it may still work
.

Highly-Annoyed

Holy major donkey balls, thats pretty dam...well i dont even know what to say...5 of those chips of and still working.....but its must hinder performance or normal operation in one way or another...afterall amd didnt just put them there because they were bored one day.....or mayb they were.
im just waiting for my TT Blue orb 2 and AS5 to come in and then ill check it, because i only have one socket 939 mb and im running stock cooler and thermal pad...so i cant pop it in just yet....ill keep you guys posted though and see what happens

The tale of the gimpy Sempron 939, a tale of sorts of a mad razor that had a mind of it's own

The "chips" are decoupling capacitors. They have two purpouses: to smooth the supply voltage to the CPU and reduce noise from the CPU to the mobo. They should not be critical.

well i hope your right there, because if thats all they do, then there is still quite a chance that the cpu will still work
