I'm done with Best of the Best.

So, last summer I had a fulltime job, lots of money to throw away. So I built my Sig rig. It cost quite a bit at the time (2200~) for everything (speakers, mouse, keyboard, etc). I learned alot over the last year, I learned that having 4081 LED's in your case makes it hard to sleep at night. I learned having the best of the best is not a smart way to build a PC. A few months ago, my build was the most cost efficient PC I could build (as highend cost efficient as you can get) and now It's surpassed easily by the new range of GPU's coming out. I don't even want my PC anymore, so I'm trying to sell it locally but not having any takers yet. I want to rebuild a nice small rig, that I can take away to university with me.

Anyways, just a rant. I think everyone realizes eventually that the higher you pay for hardware the less and less performance you get. I see people buying $6000 systems and I die a little inside. What can that $6000 system do that much better that justifies $4000? It can boot 10 seconds faster because it's SSD raid array? oh noes!! It gets 85 fps in Crysis instead of 65?

I know I know "But their enthusiasts", but it's just people falling for marketing schemes. Also, I realize I game less and less... I have over 100 PC games and through the week I find it hard to get around to play 1 or 2 hours! I used to play 100+ hours a week back in my hardcore stages, not now. I mostly only use my PC for the internet.

Anyways, just a quick rant.

Discuss.

I get what you are saying. I play a lot of L4D2 and sometimes I think to myself "why the hell do I need all this BS just to play a game that the majority people are playing with mid range PCs perfectly fine" It's like "oh wow, 250 FPS in l4D 2..... -_- "

But you are right, we are enthusiasts, and that's why we have what we have.

Honestly today I was playing Sim City 3000 and I've never had that much fun in a while. The only game I play now that stresses my PC is Empire Total War, even Crysis is easymode now, I only use it as a benchmark because I played it so much it's boring.

I had that choice to make this spring and my sig rig is the result. Ended up spending ~$850US. I get mid-30FPS Crysis at 1600x900, ~60 FPS in Borderlands.. it's all I could ask for.
Im confused why this is in the Amd General section..

I too look at my pc and sigh every now and then. I built it for gaming but I only game a little due to school. When I do game I fire up 360 since more of my friends play on the xbox than pc. :/ So now my PC mainly folds, which is fine by me.

I wouldn't spend more than $1500 on a PC.

I know that folding is a noble pursuit, but 2x285s on an i7 seems like a HUGE waste and exactly the point of the OP.

It's in the AMD section because if I ever do remake a rig I'm going AMD

Intel and Nvidia bore me.

I'm an avid "DIE CONSOLES" Kinda guy, I can't stand them. but we won't get into that now, lol. I just think it's a good idea to think about how much you'll use your PC when you buy it, what you'll use it for, etc. Really what I do on my PC could be done easily on a $600 PC, You just need to shop smart.

I want to shop smart, find parts that are cheap and can easily get me good performance below $800. Really I only bought my Rig to impress people. I used to love when people came in my room and just stared at my PC like it was an alien or something, now it just gets old. I loved flexing my epeen saying hey look, I get 28'0003dmarks, I'm awesome, but in the end... I spent $2500 to impress people, not myself.

I feel ya, thats why I traded my 920 and downgraded while pocketing some cash for other things.

My friend who I sold it too is starting to realize its overkill and its trying every which way to find stuff that will benefit from it, including Empire TW.

In all honesty someone who is content with a e5200 and an 8800gt is probably the happiest person because they can pretty much play any new game that comes out fine while still having headroom.

I know how you feel. Every time I see one of those beatutiful new gfx cards and im about to pull the trigger I say... what game cant I run...
maybe they have real jobs and it doesn't hurt to spend the money that makes you die a little in side... or like grishkathefool...

top of the line hardware will always have top of the line prices... besides at 1680*1050 your "best of the best" is wasted regardless

the transistor is what? 62 years old now? and computers have never ceased to be cheaper, better, and faster and time goes on... are you just now discovering this?

i normally go 2-3 years for core system upgrades with little upgrades/replacements every 6 months or so...

Most enthusiasts get hardware that are many years ahead of the games they play.

I really think that upgrading components is a obsession, a psychological disorder
jk on the latter lol

Its a race, just like the competition for who has the biggest TV, the most horsepower.
In this case, the race is for the most FPS, the biggest PSU. Sounds kinda lame, but its true. Nobody wants to have a Radeon All-In-Wonder in their sigs. I know I wouldnt. lol

Anyways it goes the same for women. They absolutely love shoes and they buy more than they ever wear

Why?

I dont know, and I dont think straight men knows either

Thats why when I play games, I force myself to turn off fraps and just enjoy the game itself and not worrying about if my computer isn't performing like its supposed to

This compys core components will be running in 2030 as a HTPC

I've always known this. The rant's been long overdue, and now seems like a proper time. haha.

without wanting to get too nerdy, it seems that performance to cost is exponential.
For example, say I had a regular mid range system, if i wanted to upgrade to say, three GTX285's, I would buy the 3 GPUS.

This might necessitate a motherboard upgrade to use Tri-SLI or the PCI-E slots.

This might also leave your current memory and CPU needing an upgrade, if you want/need an X58 or P55 platform.

THEN you might need a PSU upgrade.

This is obviously a ridiculous expense, Whilst if i just bought one GTX285 and replaced my current card, I could get a good 60% of the performance (that seems to me about right for the performance gains of tri-sli, its probably less tbh) for probably a LOT less cost.

I've realised that.

Seriously? I mean, I know stereotypes exist for a reason, but a generalization like that shows how little real world experience you have bro. In 40 years, I have only known one or two women with shoe obsessions.... maybe a couple dozen that like to shop on principal... but no real Imelda Marcoses...

I think everyone goes through a "Gotta spend over $9000 on a PC and have it glow with the intensity of the sun" phase

Always think before you spend...which many don't do often...

My computer is for video capturing, video editing, gaming, and a HTPC. No need to upgrade for the next 3+ years (I hope).

See, I can say the same thing. But I don't want my PC anymore, I want something worse? I want to sell my PC and build a PC for half the cost. I'll still be able to do all the things I can do now.

That's the beauty with generalizations... They dont have to be true. Just like all Asians have squinty eyes.. You know that is not true.

You married BRO? LOL

Next time check your wifes/girlfriends shoe closet. If you have more shoes than her, I wouldn't be a afraid of sandbagging you in front of everyone

Every girlfriend that I have had, heck every girl that I knew, had a lot more shoes than me. like a 3:1 ratio.

Ok i exaggerated on the part where they have countless number of shoes. But women love shoes as men love machines.

If you say im wrong, then please dont ever generalize anything yourself either, because according to you, ITS UNTRUE ahaha
