With August fast approaching I wanted to do something in remembrance of Syrillian. It's almost been 2 years since we lost him and it honestly still feels like yesterday, it hasn't been the same here without him and I know many of you feel the same way.

My skillset is no where near Syrillian's but I will try my best and try and do something that would make him proud. I have never done much work with acrylic so my medium of choice for this log will be aluminum.

Due to the time frame I will be replicating one of Syrillian's benchs, but likely with a slight twist, that is where I want your guys' help, specifically the members that have been on here for a while or those that are familiar with his work. If Daniel was still with us today, what would he have wanted, what would he have done differently.

One of Daniel's benches, the one I have here (thanks to Derickwm) and will use to replicate:

This bench has certainly seen better days, so I will also be cleaning this one up to a more pristine condition.

As for hardware, I'll see what I can do, at least for a final reveal or something.

So with all that said, I'm going to give you all a week to think things over and give your input. In that time I will try and collect more materials for the build.

My goal is to have this all done by August 13th.

Thank you

Thanks everyone, definitely excited to get to work on this!

I'd really like to thank spotswood for his generosity, he's kindly offered to supply some material for the bench, can't thank him enough for that. Would have been hard to source it locally.

I should have some of the sheeting later on today.

You kind of did by saying that with the link in your sig, lol. Kind of funny re-reading that thread, that was kind of when we first me

No suggestions what so ever

lol.

Spotswood was generous enough to send multiple types of aluminum extruded pieces so I have been thinking of a couple ways to modernize/expand upon Syrillian's design.

I'll be using the rounded pieces in the corners to smooth the design out a bit while extending the width a bit (removing some of the overhang) to accommodate for XLATX boards.

Completely forgot to take pictures of the raw sheet but I'm going to say you guys have a good idea on what aluminum sheets look like. Made some rough cuts tonight of the sheets, hopefully clean that up early on tomorrow and possibly drill the holes to mount the extruded pieces.

Also stopped by the powder coater today to get a quote for the pieces (and to see when my TJ07 will be done, lol)

Anyways, a few pics of the materials.

Subbed. Has it been two years already? Damn...it does still feel like yesterday.

Be keeping a close eye on this, interested to see what you come up with. Maybe an mITX version? Space for rads? Just throwing ideas around.

There will definitely be radiator support, although rather basic support.

mITX version next year maybe, just don't have a board so I wouldn't be able to really show it off or utilize it.

Thanks for the idea though

Great idea and a fitting tribute! Unfortunately, he was already gone by the time I joined OCN - but his build threads were some of the first ones on here that I read from start to finish. He was truly a great artist when it came to visualizing in 3D... and then making it look even better in the execution!

Don't know how 'doable' it would wind up being, but I think having some kind of cable management would be different - especially on a bench. So much of the time, due to the open-air nature of test benches the cables are all draped over the sides or hanging off components. Part of that is a necessity, and part of it is convenience - but I think some kind of modular framework could be developed to contain and ultimately hide a great deal of the wiring could be pulled off - maybe with square channel 'arms' that could act as conduit to the MB/GPU areas in general (keeping clear of the actual MB area itself so it would still be useful if swapping hardware regularly - since it is a bench after all).

With most of Syrillian's builds there wasn't true 'cable management channels' per se - but they were always routed between layers or through 'hallways' (for lack of a better term) and thus always looked super clean while still being readily accessible to the user if changes were necessary.

Anyway food for thought and definitely subbed to see how this goes!
