Industrial TIM and Questions

310 Views 7 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  Maxxa
I have no stores near me that sell any decent TIM, later this week I will be upgradings the cooler on my 480 and I'm wondering how good this industrial silicone heat transfer material is.

MG chemicals silicone heat transfer compound

I got it from the electricians that work in my plant, it says ideal for thermocouple wells, power diodes, transistors, semi-conductors, ballasts and improving thermal connections between CPU and heat sinks.
Also says does not separate.

Any input? I'm guessing it's probably really good stuff.

Doesn't hurt to try! Who knows, it might be really good.

That's what I'm thinking, it's non conductive so it can't hurt I guess. I will aslo update this thread with results.

Just to update because now the TIM is set with ambients around 20C i have seen as low as 29c idle and full GPU load 79c that's on an overclocked GTX 480!

MG chemicals silicone heat transfer compound works pretty damn fine if you ask me.
My guess is that is the same as the white pigeon poop we used to use. It should be fine. In my experience there is very little difference in temps related to TIMs.
You can always order online, TIM from sites like Newegg has free shipping, so the $5 TIM only costs you $5, + tax though I think.

I realize you're in Canada so I don't know if that would make it significantly more expensive to have it delivered.

I got mine from a local RadioShack store though.

In these TIM threads, I always pull out an old quote from an electronics site:
"Any goop [TIM] is better than no goop"

I personally use TIM-Consultants Quantum. price is right and it's 50g for the same price as a 12.5g tube of MX2 (when I last bought it)
Yeah I have ordered it in the past but at the time I was installing the GPU cooler I didn't want to wait a couple days for TIM. I knew this would work but working what I would consider extremely well was a surprise.
