Inexpensive AMD build?

Final build attached below

My brother wants a new computer (no OS or peripherals, just the tower)...

He plays Runescape HD and watches videos on Hulu and such. Maybe a few games like Fallout 3 or Assassin's Creed (not on highest settings of course), but that's not top priority. Resolution will be at 1440x900.

I'm assuming he won't need much power...what do you think the best route is? Pre-built or build it?

Budget is as cheap as possible for what he needs...450 or so max? Don't really have a firm budget.

I may just give him my 8800GTS and upgrade...

What do you guys think?

If you can get him the video card, that's a good chunk of your budget saved right there. I'd actually look into getting my case. It's a decent case. Not flashy, but cheap and a far higher quality then I would expect at it's price level.

I agree with rosewill cases. I had one as a temp for my bro's computer. It was absolutely great for the 20 bucks I spent on it. As a matter of fact. It's being used for my mother's computer right now.

If you wanted to give him your 8800GTS, you could definitely upgrade the rest - namely the CPU/Mobo (X3 720?) and the HDD.

Phenom I X4's are incredibly weak vs. any of the newer AMDs, C2Ds and even the newer C2D Celerons. (Unless you are using a program that specifically wants 4 cores and performs lower across the board on anything less)

If you want to use the 8800GTS in it, you could do a prebuilt with much better specs than that.

The problem with that Gigabyte case is that it's going to go back up in price VERY soon.

Dang, I forgot my case was on sale when I got it. Still, $30 for a great quality case for the price is good.

As far as the video card goes, it doesn't seem like he'll need much. My little brother played Runescape HD so I gave him my old, old ATI x1350 card and it ran fine.

He'll definitely be set with your 8800GTS if you go that route. 1440x900 is not a very demanding resolution.

The old card would struggle with Fallout 3 or Assassin's Creed though.

8800GTS would do it decently.

build and do it right... cheapo pre builts tend to not last long due to crap parts that they use

You can buy budget and not get crap.

The build I listed above is $450 shipped, has every component the OP asked for, and every part is reliable.

My build was only $400 when I got it... of course, the PSU was crap. I'm glad it didn't kill my stuff when it blew. Now I have my Corsair, and decided to sign up on this site after lurking for a while and after picking out my Corsair from a list elsewhere on this site... but enough about that. The point is, every other part from my $400 (now $500) build is working perfectly.
check out the gigabyte g41 with svga/dvi/hdmi, just built a few dozen systems with that board and couldn't be happier with it...

works great with xp sp3, vista 64 and windows 7 with included drivers
Thanks for the responses, the suggestions look good.

I may want to wait for Fermi to come out so the ATI 5 series will drop in price...so maybe buy a cheap card to hold him over? (I don't know if it will be worth it to buy one I can use for Physx in the future, but it doesn't work with ATI cards right?)

The cheaper the better. I'm sure he'll be fine with a dual core, don't think a quad is necessary...
as the guy above mentioned, i would look into tiger's barebone systems or even newegg's combo deals. depending on which parts you buy together you could end up saving a ton of money

I think you misunderstood me I said build it and do it right rather than pre built because pre builts (off the racks) tend to use cheap parts i did not mean that he cant build one with quality parts for that price heck I got a core2d I built for 400 that still runs like a champ

I in no way meant my post to be a bad comment against budget builds
