hi,

i tryed raid for the first time a few days ago.
i had a question about stripe size but nobody could really awnser it
Image

On alot of forums this question is been asked but none give's a clear awnser.
Sadly enough after my little test i dont have it either really.
But with the info given you can maybe make up your own mind and pick whats best

Test system:
-i7-860 @ 3,8ghz
-4GB RAm @ 1824mhz
-Asus P7P55D Premium board
-2X Intel X25-M 80GB SSD's
not going to name all system parts becuase they dont matter for this test.

The ssd's are connected to the ICH10R controller of the mainboard P55 chipset.

The test:
simple basic test with just AS SSD benchmark.
We will be testing 128K, 64K,16K and 4K stripe sizes.
Also test difference between write cache disabled and enabled.
everywhere you ask people say have your wite cache disabled, i think this test shows otherwise

128K stripe size and cache disabled

not much different in stripe sizes but it seems to me 64K is best. and it looks like you loose a little bit performance when you go smaller stripe size's

what does make a huge difference is the write cache.
I been reading everywhere people saying turn it of for better performance but i think this little test has proven differently.

attleast i am sticking with 64K stripe size and cache enabled

again this thread is just for info

Yeah, I really wish people wouldn't spew misinformation.

Enabling "write-back cache" (also called "disable buffer flushing" in windows 7) improves performance quite a bit!

yeah i also think this, maybe its not misinformation of others but it seems intel X25-m ssd's seem to improve alot with write back cache enabled on a intel ICH10R chipset

Maybe other ssd's, other chipsets or even dedicated raid cards dont benefit from this

wish i could test this but i dont have the recourses for a big test like that

my next steps of test will include 3 ssd running raid-0 with alot of stripe sizes with cache enabled and disabled and want to test difference when running 2 partitions on 1 raid with ssd's
