Installed Ubuntu, very unstable...

I installed Ubuntu on my spare drive that I used for backups.

I boot using AHCI=OFF command, since I set my SATA mode to RAID.

When I was done with the installation, if I try to do anything, it just crashes, and in a very miserable way.

Whether it's opening up settings, or doing just about anything else, I get a stuck cursor first, and then I get a black screen with a "_" in the top left corner, and from that point I have to hold my power button for 5 seconds since the screen lasts forever, and after that I have to angrily boot back into Windows.

I installed Ubuntu a long time ago on this same rig back when I didn't have RAID0, I think it was pretty stable, I just didn't have enough interest back then.

Should I remove all other drives and set sata mode to AHCI?
This will be very inconvenient.
Plus, Ubuntu refuses to boot without "ahci=off"..

I was and forever will be a Windows user (games, MS office, other things that I know and love).
But I wanted to go ahead and really try Ubuntu.

sounds like it doesnt like raid, if your not going to use it much, if u got a 8gb penstick lyin about why dont u install it to that as a live session, and just boot off the usb when u wana have a play

its your overclock. windows stable overclocks, aren't always stable in linux, as the kernel is less forgiving, trying throttling back a bit on the OC.

Which is unstable, ubuntu or Windows?

If Windows:

You have to edit your a value in your Windows registry if you toggle your AHCI setting in the BIOS or else it'll crash. It happened to me as well.

no, no, Windows is fine, and I think I fixed it by downclocking it. I'm posting from firefox in Ubuntu right now, I will check other things to see if it crashes, but it's good so far.

Yep, everything seems to work perfectly, also I had some confusion in the OP and wrote AHCI..
When I actually wrote acpi=off..

Ubuntu is very, very impressive so far, so many cool things, Firefox is there, other awesome software is there, and maybe I'll use this as my work operating system, because Windows still has the majority of my applications, including games

Yeah, you must've just not been stable. The general consensus is that GNU/Linux is a little bit more picky then Windows when it comes to overclocks.

little bit more picky... but faster at lower clocks anyway

just think... ubuntu is the bloated linux
