Well it depends, most people think it's better if you flash back to stock firmware and then flash to whatever ROM you want. At least that's what is recommend on the Samsung Captivate. Though I don't see why you couldn't install it straight from CWM.

What phone do you have?

Here's what you can do (if your phone is compatible with the ROM)

Go to Rom Manager.
Go to Download Rom.
Select the ROM you want.
After it downloads, click on it from your status bar.
ROM manager will open and ask you two things:
Do you want to backup your existing ROM? (this is a YES)
Do you want to wipe data/cache? (This is generally also a yes, though you can choose not to).

Click Install or whatever.
The phone will reboot and install the ROM after backing your current ROM up.

ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS back up a stable, working ROM. I can't stress that enough. Cos I swear to God, if I read one more thread anywhere that says "flashed ROM, didn't backup, need help! I'm gonna go bat-crap crazy.

If this is a Motorola phone I can help you get it back to factory if something goes very sour.

its my samsung fascinate.

i want to install the super clean rom from jt107 but if i d/l to my sd card then install it will reboot my phone and do all the work correct?

not saying i cant install it manually but rooting my phone the first time was kinda nerve wrecking because i thought i bricked it twice, i want a custom rom so it runs smoother but if downloading it from clockwork then clockwork installs it im gonna do it.

maybe ill wait for cy7

I haven't checked the ROM section in ROM manager for a while but last time I did, it was a bit out dated. Check the droid hacks section at droidforums.net, find a ROM you want to try, download and save it to your sd card (if it's not already listed in ROM manager). Then in ROM Manager choose "install ROM from SD card". It will give you the options to back up your current ROM and wipe data, make sure to check both. After that it will do the rest. ROM manager will reboot your phone in to recovery, back up your current ROM, wipe data, install new ROM, then reboot your phone. All thats left after that is signing in to your google account and setting up your phone the way you like it.

I wouldn't use ROM Manager. Yeah, it's much easier, but the old school version isn't much harder. Most ROMs in ROM Manager are outdated, and it doesn't support many of the best ROMs.

SGS Kernel Flasher... Put the Rom on your SD and go to town. No need for CWM anymore unless you have other stuff to do in it.

You should always backup the phone and after the flash restore just the DATA!
