Installing Opty 144 and mobo

I finally got it!!!!!!

The Opterons stepping is CAB2E 0548FPMW is this a good stepping? I'm about to install it and would like to have some advice before I put it in and mess everything up. Unfortunately I don't have ESD bracelet so what precautions should I take to stay grounded? I'm so excited!!!!!!

bump, I'm really anxious, and is there already something on the ase of the heat sink? how do I remove that stuff?

i would suggest that you put ur mobo on the anti static mat that came with the mobo box and install the cpu on the mobo. but if you are installing the cpu with the mobo installed inside the case then just make sure that your case is complete with all four plastic legs. otherwise just cut the anti-static mat and put it where the leg is missing.

for your person. hold some exposed unpainted metal for about 10 seconds just to release the static charge and make sure u r not standing on any mat or carpets when doing the installation. you can continuosly do this as long as u r working on the system. i have done this all my life and never actually bought a bracelet coz i find it a waste of money. works all the time.

sorry i missed ur question about the heat sink earlier. you can just remove the material from the heat sink by first peeling it off and then washing it off with some soap. after which at the end use IPA to clean the heat sink base properly and apply the AS5.

well I used nail polish remover because it contains alchohol, now onto AS5, any reccomendations other than a bb size drop in the cener of the processor?

i am sorry mate, i think it is best u remove the cpu and heatsink and clean it again with IPA. read relevant FAQ on removal of thermal paste by Itallion Stallion. it is correct because the substance of the nail polish remover seeps into the pores and doesnt allow good contact between the AS5 and heat sink.

as for the stepping i aint too sure since i dont have much experience on this.

stay grounded by just holding onto the side of the case, the metal part, not coloured and you will be fine
