Should the graphics card be directly powered from the PSU? With one of those 6 pin cables?

YES, or you rissk frying the card or damaging other components, or you wont see anything on the screen

They put it there for a reason
Am currently powering mine with one of those 4 pin connectos which are split.

Its the right cable on this pic http://www.bit-tech.net/content_imag...xfx-cables.jpg

Do I use this cable and plug in both ends or not?

Yep, that'll work fine if you don't have the direct plug from your power supply. Using 2 4pin molex connectors is the same thing, except you'll be sharing that line with anything else plugged onto it, obviously.

If you want your GPU to work properly, then make sure it's connected directly to the PSU.
