Installing software on linux

ive messed around with linux here and there, but i just recently installed it on one of my rigs. i chose kubuntu. i was wondering if somebody could help me on installing programs, this confuses the f*** out of me. i really have no idea what to do. does anybody know any good guides that tell you how to install stuff from tar.gz files?

You would want to use an application like Synaptic or Kynaptic to install things in Ubuntu/Kubuntu.

What were you trying to install?

i looked around and people seem to think Kpackage is better then Kynaptic. i cant find where to download it though and after i do ill probably need some help getting it to work
