Do you think that an Intel motherboard that would not normally have overclock and tweak settings might unlock them when you have a ES chip in it?

ES chips have unlocked multipliers...no special intel board needed.

Hence the rarity of them, and the expense when you find them

No, see, you don't understand. I have an Intel board, and it has rather limited OCing features. I am currently trying to purchase an ES processor, and I thought that possbily my Intel mobo might unlock all of its OCing features when the ES processor is used.

An ES processor is not going to change your BIOS options. About all it allows is for the changing the multiplier if the BIOS supports that option. You'd probably be better off buying a "standard" CPU and an overclocking mobo instead of paying the premium for an ES.

ES chips are great...if you wanna pick me up a 3.4 HT northwood I'd love it (but not too pricey please)

And, some chips change the bios, but only slightly. Intel boards are known for being tight arses, so don't expect a lot from them...cheers!
