Intel or AMD budget build?

2454 Views 41 Replies 16 Participants Last post by  canadianpanda
Hello,

Overall it looks like AMD is better for budget but I may be wrong.
I am looking at a 720 BE if I go AMD but if I go intel I would like something powerful but the same price or lower. I am looking to potentially overclock and either crossfire or SLI. What should I do? Any recommended builds?

I am looking for gaming and something faster then my intel Pentium 4 @ 4.3 Ghz build from back when the ATI AIW X800 came out. Something better then my sig rig that will have the ability to game / do video editing.

Edit1: All I need is a Mobo , Ram , CPU , GPU.
Edit2: Preferably below $550 Canadian ( www.Newegg.ca ) Would consider going up to 650 possibly.
Edit3: Shipping zip is V9T5M7

IMO, SLI and Crossfire have no business being in a "budget" build. Take all the extra savings from not buying a more expensive motherboard and power supply and use that to beef up the single card system. You'll end up with a faster system for the same money. With that said, can you tell us what sort of budget you're working with?

That's not true. My setup in my sig was a budget build. You can easily go Crossfire with a budget build. SLI, maybe not but that's due to the equivalent Nvidia to ATI card being at least 2x the cost.

I've got several AMD and ATI builds on standby. Depending on your $$$ limits, I can help you out. AMD and ATI are for the budget people.

With that SLI soft mod going around, I would only worry about getting a 790X/GX with dual lanes.
My fault I did not specify , I am going to go with a single card for now. Sorry for not mentioning that. All I need is a Mobo , Ram , CPU , GPU.

Edit:
oh and lets see Preferably below $550 Canadian ( www.Newegg.ca ) Would consider going up to 650 possibly.
i5-750 Quad 2.66GHZ
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...-215-_-Product
$220

ASUS P7P55D LE LGA 1156 Intel P55
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...-410-_-Product
$150

4GB 2X2 GB Ripjaws DDR3-1600 @ 7-8-7-24 @1.65V which is i5 MAX Voltage for RAM
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...-303-_-Product
$85

Sapphire ATI 5770
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...-864-_-Product
$170

so total: $625
Think about it, a new quad core with great overclock ability, a good quality motherboard, Fast ram, and DX 11 capable card that manages to crush the GTX 295 in crossfire!!

Also if you feel like a person who wants crossfire later on, don't skimp so much for a better motherboard

IMO, getting an AMD system is your safest bet because AMD do not overprice their processors as much as Intel.

Bump , any other recommended builds? or opinions?
AMD all the way. Intels are great but they are far too expensive for power that an amd may have for cheaper.
yes I agree from what I am seeing. Honestly I can't decide on what I want , Intel dual core or AMD dual or triple core. I have built many computers but when it comes to my own I can never decide on what I want. Thus the starting of this thread haha.
For a processor you should really look at the Athlon II 620 since its just a quad-core phenom II with L3 cache disabled and performs pretty much the same.

orly?
Have you seen 620 reviews? the difference is too little to be a deal breaker especially since you can get AT LEAST 3.6ghz out of the chip.

Honestly , I think I am leaning toward a 720BE or 550BE for the overclocking and potential 4 Cores , Not really holding my breath about unlocking the cores but the unlocked multiplier would be nice. Recommended CPU fan? , Motherboard?

there are cheaper setups

if your on a uberbudget I would do this instead

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813186177

$79 motherboard

I would still do the 5770 for the video card. Trust me you wont be sorry for getting it

if your a casual gamer (L4D,COD5) then I would just get 4650

37.99 after rebate
