Intel's first quad-core desktop processor, the Core 2 Extreme QX6700, which is scheduled to be released next month, will sell for US$999 in 1,000-unit quantities, according to sources at Taiwan motherboard makers who are familiar with Intel's latest roadmap. The Core 2 Quad Q6600 processor will be available in January 2007 at US$851, the sources added.
The sources suggested that prices of quad-core CPUs may start declining in the third quarter of 2007 when Intel is expected to launch its next-generation quad-core processors, codenamed Yorkfield.

cool but nah. I really dont feel the need to aquire any kind of quad core technology. I'm fine with c2d and i cant wait for the c2d revision with a higher fsb. Quad core is overrated it dosent really make much of a difference no programse utilize all 4 cores yet and they wont for about a year or so mabye more

If you believe that...then you don't know how a multi-core program works...lol.

Any program that takes advantage of dual cores...will take advantage of quad cores..

They don't go "oh well...we'll write this program for 2 cores"

It's more like "let's make this multi-threaded to use multiple cores"...

So that means it'll use as many as it can get it's grubby little hands on..

I can't wait till they make a cost efficient version (maybe like 1.8ghz?) thats what I will get, even if it doesn't OC very high its still freaking QUAD core! I'd use it just for bragging rights lmao, Yo what does your server have? oh whats that 4 xeon processors? Sorry mate I've got QUAD!!! wouldn't you just love to say that you have more or as many cores as high end servers?

This is a LOT cheaper than I suspected.

But I still won't be buying one. Not until I am convinced Alan Wake is a good enough game to spend that much on it just to play it and I only payed 50 for the game. Besides I am very satisfied with my Dual Core processor. I do everything I want to on it and I don't have a hitch watsoever.

Where's the fun in that? I know many people on this site would just love to break 100C on both their CPU and Crossfire GPUs!

Interesting....Last I heard they had a quad core 6800 due out this year, the 6600 and 6700 quads were next year.......I may look into a 6600 quad next year if I can get one "cheap"

As to whether a quad is for you depends on what you do.....gaming it will have limited impact, however, for those of us who do a lot of video encoding and massive multitasking they wil be quite usefull......in early tests they have already shown encoding HD TV content to be majorly impacted by qud cores.

However, if Yorkfields are due the end of next year, perhaps I will wait, let them work out some bugs in the quad core design. That will make my wife happy anyway

The price seems high for the Q6600 as most predictions I remember seeing were putting it at around $500-$700. At $851 looks like I might have to pass

Acutally the TDP for the 2.66GHz E6700 is 65W, while the 2.66GHz QX6700 is 120W, so they did manage to shave off 10W. Plus its less than what the dual core FX-7X series is going to be (125W).

I read that Quad core was going to bust out at $515 a while back. I am super disappointed now. I guess I will just drop my cash on a 6600 or 6700 and just start saving for late 07. I mean, overclocked, I think that a 6700 would hold up with just about anything R600 can dish out. *pray*
