Interested in getting this as my secondary machine

Can it play 720p mkv files okay? How about 1080p? (downscaled to fit the 1366x768 screen). If it can't play 1080p then that isn't too much of a problem (gaming PC can take care of that

)... playing 720p mkv files is the main thing.

It can definitely play both 1080p and 720p. It's a Core 2 Duo, and that chip is enough to handle all your basic needs.
