Internet works in Vista but not in Linux

588 Views 19 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  Microsis
I'm connected to my on campus apartment internet which is I believe a T1 connection... However I'm plugged into a wall (ethernet) so I have no access to the router or anything.

Anyway, I am dual-booting Vista/Ubuntu and the internet used to work in both... Now it only works in Vista. My roommate has the same issue: His laptop has Linux Mint and does not get internet in his room, but his desktop with XP does.

Any idea why this is? Could the ISP or router be set-up with a firewall blocking Linux connections?

It has happened to me once before whilst trying to set WiFi up on an Ubuntu install. I basically plugged straight in from the Cable Modem to the Laptop via Ethernet. No connection, but then switched back to vista and Shazzam! I had interwebz access.

Ill keep an eye out for any info on this but it might be a restriction with the shipping driver in Ubuntu. Possible that IP's arent being allocated correctly on a direct connection.

I'm on a direct ethernet connection. I know it's not a driver issue because it used to work. And the weird thing is it says it is connected at the top, and I have an IP address and everything.. Just nothing that needs the internet works..

Oh, not quite the same as mine then
Sorry for misunderstanding.

Ill still keep an eye out though. If you can contact the systems admin it might be worth check if they have made any changes to the network.

you cant access the internet, have you tried running an update to see if it can connect alone?

Nothing. Says "Downloading File 1/15" or whatever but does nothing... Then errors out about failed connection.

I guess I will try call up the internet technicians tomorrow and see what they have to say...

Hm.

* Are you getting a real IP address (and not one of those 169.254.x.x)?
* What's the content of your /etc/resolv.conf file?
* What's the output from the /sbin/ifconfig command?
* What's the output from the /sbin/route -n command?

Hm, all of that looks OK. Is that the same IP address, gateway and DNS servers you get in Windows?

Yeah, it's traceroute. Or tracert in Windows. Try traceroute www.google.com in Linux, and tracert www.google.com in Windows. Post the results of both for comparison.
