Not sure what section to put this in.

Any way I can watch movies stored on my computer on my ipad? My media drive is shared across the network, but the ipad doesn't seem to be able to do anything but go on the internet and buy apps. From what I can see it's just an oversized iphone.

Also what does it mean to jailbreak? Is there some hidden functionality I can't use?

You can load movies in mp4 format to your iPad through iTunes. If you're talking about streaming a movie on your PC to your iPad, I don't know if you can do that other than using something like Netflix or Hulu which would stream from the internet.

There really isn't any functionality in terms of extra apps or formats that the ipad can play over the iphone.

Android 3.1 tablets however can play mkv containers and h264 right out of the box.

Well, if you jailbreak, you can get a ported version of the popular VLC media player which may or may not be useful for you. There are apps to stream media over your network such as airvideo.
