Is there any way a defective motherboard can damage a power supply?

More than likely no.

But a defective power supply could damage a motherboard among other things.

If the power supply is a el-cheapo POS with no short protection, a bad motherboard could definitely damage the power supply unit. But I would hope that any power supply has short protection..
