I was just wondering if it is possible to follow through with my idea. I had the idea of setting up an external harddrive that I could access with my xbox 360 or my laptop and stream movies over my family's wireless network. Would this be possible to do and what would I need to make it work? Thanks guys!

upgrade to windows 7 then it would be possible not sure on vista though

There are network harddrives that you can connect to your modem/router so that everything on your network can see it. This allows everything connected on the network to read/write from it. I currently use 2 1Tb drives like this for backups of my music & movies.

This( i use one for a xbmc media host)
