I got an X850 XT around 8 months ago, made an attempt at overclocking it a bit ago, but clocked it back down. Now on the weekend my friend was using the PC, when I came though a few hours later, the screen was all wierd in WoW, and he said the screen had crashed to black a while ago and had required forced restart. So I wondered what was up, but after a installing of the latest omega's everything was fine and dandy. Then yesturday I started to play half life episode one, and after a while the graphic's went weird and the screen went black (IE went to the "check input cable screen") and I was forced to restart. I opened up tray tools to give it a check and ran WoW (which has never given me a full load) and was hitting 92C. Turnning the fan to 100% got be down to around 85 or so in half life 2. Having the case open got me down to around 65-70. and after a quick dedusting I get around 75-76 with the case closed. I'm getting idles of around 45 with the case closed.

Now as I understand it 75 isn't that bad a temp (tell me if I'm wrong). but when I was crashing I was getting no artifacts until the crash, and when I was running Dawn of War: Dark Crusade last night I was running at 75 and I got an artifact a fairly major one. So I closed down the game.

Now heres the kicker I'm currently not overclocking atall. Now what I'm wondering is 75 on load far too high for an unclocked card. My flats not particularly hot. I did move the pc a bit on the weekend so it is possible I've shifted something, or knocked some dust where it shouldn't be.

So just looking for opinons on this. What should I look for if it's dust/the heat sink knocked out of place? What temps should I realisticly be looking at?

Oh it's stock cooling.

And finally if all is lost whats a decent upgrade that won't break the student loan bank?

Thanks on advance for any help.

Try taking it out of the slot, putting it back in, unplugging the cable from the monitor, an plugging that in. No garuntee it will work, but it's worth a shot.

As for a decent upgrade, if it's PCI express, the 7900GS or X1950Pro would be a good choice. I think there is an AGP X1950Pro coming out, too.

If you're using the stock heatsink, then you're all fine, because I have temps in that area.
What kind of PSU (Power Supplying unit) do you have? Model, Watts, and the Amperage of your 12V rail(s) and 5V rail.
Well if it's not over heating then something's gone wrong, I'll check the mounting, maybe it got knocked out a little, if all else fails I'll go warrenty hunting.

I'll check up the PSU stuff in a little while.

I used the ati tray tools with the fan at 100% got no artifacts. So seems theres nothing wrong with my PC, which is odd with the crashes I got, but I'll keep an eye on the prices of a replacement, and keep and eye out for crashes.

RMA it... there's no reason to junk a perfectly good series card

but first, have you tried the "if...then" fan control (if 50C, then do 35%)

RMA?

And currently it's on the auto fill ones of the omega ATI tray tools
25C=50%
40C=75%
50C=85%
55C=100%

I settled one issue which was a half life issue. But I got one of the crashes again. Now I know these aren't due to the game, as one time when I had one, I restarted the computer fairly fast and the graphical issue carryed over for a little while. I get no artifacts anywhere until the issue comes up, at which point the screen gets covered in red lines small ones but a repeating pattern, then it goes off.

And I just realised I never tried to unplug the monitor, and that this could be a monitor issue. I'll update if that changes anything.

exactly, just RMA it, and if you want, buy a new card and sell the X850XT when it returns from RMA process

or just wait....

Those temps are definetly way too high, and are probably causing the crashes. The cooler have have been unseated from the gpu, bad connection, bad thermal dissapation.

Chuck some thermal paste, alot of the guys use arctic silver, and resinstall your cooler, or take the opputunity and buy a better cooler to drop the temps even further. My card runs 15-20 C cooler, and I can OC it further and still keep temps lower, + it only cost me $35 AUS ($25 US), so definitly worth it. I didnt replace mine because it was causing errors though, my fan was getting noisy.

Maybe put fresh thermal paste and tighten down the cooler again, possibly underclock your card to keep the temps down to 50-60 C underload and see if you can achieve no errors. If the systems stable after this you know its temp related, and buy a better cooler and crank up the speeds again. If it crashes then theres a problem still inherenty in the card physically and it'll need to be sent back.
