I have an E4400 2.0ghz processor and I found out the other day after reading its important to remove and clean the heatsink. I did not know this. I had it for 3 years now and have just been cleaning surface dust off of the heatsink and inside the case. To my knowledge its been in good shape, its never given me a hard time or anything. but Now Im really concerned that is going to burn up.

I installed Evga's E leet to detect the temperatures and Idling its at 50-58c and If I play a game or render a video, it shoots up to the mid 80's and the maximum its gotten to and stays at under full load is 98c! so as we speak im not doing much with it other than surfing the web.

to make matters a little more confusing I did not check the temperature on the cpu before I removed and cleaned the heatsink, only afterward. so i do not know if it's been running like this since I got it 3 years ago. Or just now that I removed the heatsink to clean it. I did put it back on properly and carefully rechecked it. I'm curious, is there a way to find out past cpu temperatures to find out what its been running at?

as far as I know it uses a thermal pad for cooling, not thermal past. There is a strange residue under the heat sink, I dont know if it is thermal past residure or an old worn out thermal pad. But, can you give me a suggestion of how to fix this heat problem? Should I try some thermal past first? I do not have a lot of money for a new heatsink but as I understand the stock heatsink which comes with the e4400 is not very good. Also I've done a little research now and there are alot of conflicting opinions about how hot the e4400 cpu can be running. I've read a few people say that they've been using it at 85c + degrees no problem. I also checked the bios to detect the idling tempature rate and it says 70c, not the 50-58c detected by eleet inside windows. As i understand these are approximations, but im not sure which one is correct or if they even are close to being correct.

Get this, and be sure to thoroughly clean the processor before installing it. It has some good thermal grease pre-applied, so all you have to do is follow the instruction manual and you should be set.

80C is definitely far too hot for that generation of processor. More modern intel processors can take up to 100C or higher, but rule of thumb is to keep it below 80C.
