Is My Psu Dead?

631 Views 17 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  PapaSmurf
so i bought a new psu. Coolermaster GX 650w. I wanted to check if it wasnt dead, since my first build came with a doa psu。 I plugged the Psu in and plugged in a spare fan。 The fan doesnt turn on。 I got the fan plugged it in my ancient acer computer's psu, and the fan worked。 Is my Psu dead? Or is it because i dont have my psu connected to the mobo?

You have to give the PSU a "power on" signal before it will send power. You can do this by shorting (with a paper clip or something) the green wire (16) on the 24 Pin motherboard connector with any black wire (15, 17, 18,...)

is that the only way? or can i assemble my pc first then plug it in? Are you sure its not dead? i plugged a fan into it , and it didnt start up。
If you're really concerned, just do that. It doesn't hurt the PSU if you do it right. Just takes 10 seconds to unfold a paper clip and stick it in the rights pins. It will not send any-power to anything unless the green pin is grounded.

Make sure the power switch on the back of the PSU is on as-well.
The fan wont start before the PSU get's a signal to power on.

So you would either have to do it the hard way and connect it to your MB etc, or just do it the easy way, a.k.a paperclip.

okay so if i do thepaper clip method, do i need to shove the parerclip all the way in? cause the holes are really small and has another silver hole ,or do i just put it in slighty?

Unless you have MASSIVE paperclips, it should fit in all the way.
okay so shove paperclip all the way in to greenwire and black, if the fan on the psu doesnt spin, its dead?

I would think so, yes.

Yes, but there's a better chance that it's fine rather than DOA.

Um, those colorful bendy ones are metal as well. Just strip off the plastic coating. Or try it without doing it. Perhaps the core of the clip will still make enough contact to get the job done!
just run the psu outside your case and run the power cables in to temporarily test it to find out

im sry but what do you mean by this? do you mean connect all my hardware to the psu?
yeah just plug in the bare essentials to see if the pc will boot while its outside the case or whatnot..
so i connected my cpu mobo harddrive video card, plugged in everything turned the psu on, nothing... its dead right?
You need to press the power button on the front of the computer or the one on your mobo if it has one. Also make sure you have your front case panel connectors plugged in or else your power button won't work.
