Here is a question. If we set our bios to default then reboot and check the vcore in bios will this be the VID?

/proc/cpuinfo doesn't give that info?

Also I read a while back that DangerousHobo was writing a program that was similar to cpu-z for linux.

Essentially It's what the motherboard is pumping to the processor to get it running on auto.

No, the VID is used to obtain a vcore. Vcore = Vcc = voltage common cathode.

They will be different in the BIOS. What levels are you seeing in the BIOS?

To find the CPU VID...start Real Temp, click the small button at the top to the right of Intel E7400 2800.00MHz(or whatever your OC is). You will be able to go through displays of core speed, FSB x Multiplier MHz, VID, CPUID, and duration of time Real Temp has been running.

So if you click the button twice your CPU VID will be displayed.

Here is a link to an explanation of VID.

is that good or bad?

It's not good or bad. Its just an electrical specification of the processor, that is handled by the voltage regulator of the motherboard.

The VID range for that processor is: .85 - 1.3625, so it will vary. You will also get different values of core voltage through programs like CPUz when under load, due to Vdroop.

As far as voltage, your good to go.

As far as temps, if you want lower ones, there is always the option of aftermarket cooling, as suggested here.

I had this E7400 installed in my brothers pc. He has an ASUS p5n73-AM motherboard. I overclocked this cpu up to 3.7GHz stable (actual is 3.675GHz).
He is using a Thermaltake Blue Orb 2 for cooling. Its not that good, but it cools it good. there is one fan for intake and one for exhaust. thats why there is a lot of ventilation, through the case. His CPU idles at 30c and on load its at 39c. you probably dont have a ventilated pc. Let me know if you have any questions.

Good luck.

i have a e7400 and i out the heatsink in but i havent overclocked it at all because my msi p7n diamond has a feature which is d.o.t ....dynamic overclocking technology. which means when it reads im running a program lets say crysis. it realize it stress level and over clocks it to the right frequency...but i just built my pc and when i turn it on. i have hardrive that has vista on it form my old comp. cuz i dont have my os dis. but for some reason it will finish the loading tihing when i start my cmputer but then it goes to a blue error screen and then restarts....i also get a real hot cpu..I cant even touch it its so hot....and then everytime i turn it on it will alll of a sudden shut down aoutomaticly.....is it becuz my cpu is falty or its to hot and it shuts down automaticly or is it becuz i need to reinstall a new os

What are your system specs and what setting do you have in your bios. If you post these it will be easier for everyone to help you.

What heat sink are you using? What thermal paste are you using?
