A line from the argument
"if it removes viruses, it's an AV"

But does Spyware remove viruses? Or does it just remove spyware?

Who knows? Ask some more people. Friend is dying to know results, I'm favouring the "No"

Because if it's defined as an "anti-virus" which he says, then why does it primarily have the original purpose of protection against spyware?
See if anyone can pull off an unbiased opinion.

I don't use Spybot, but its name tells me that it is strictly for removing (and hopefully preventing) the acquisition of Spyware and only Spyware. If so, then it would just be an anti-spyware program and nothing more.

By the way, I don't use Spybot because I use Firefox 4.0

I think only one person in this entire thread will really get this.

its a surgical tool, not an immunization.

If you cut off your foot you won't get toenail fungus.

Imho its too much to run up-front when programs like AVG are perfectly reliable.

No AVG hating, it has the best track record on the market.

this is the reply i got from the guys

Hello,

Spybot - Search & Destroy is not designed to find/remove viruses or worms.
It is designed for spyware, malware, adware, trojans, hijackers, keyloggers and rootkits.
If you have no antivirus protection yet you should look for some.
Many people are asking for recommendations regarding firewall and antivirus software they should use.
Our recommendation regarding firewalls is Outpost from Agnitum.
http://www.agnitum.com/products/outpost/
Even the free version - Outpost Free - will fit most users' needs.

For a free anti-virus software for personal use, take a look at H+BEDV AntiVir:
