Considering getting one of these and wanted to know how the online gaming works. Do you just buy some game and then play online or do you have to pay for online gaming time or what.

just connect it to the internet mate, and if the game can be played online[most can nowadays] just play away. no subscriptions or anything like.

Despite what all the other console gamers say, playstation network actually works very well IMO. Maybe not as streamlined as the other brand, but getting there. Hell, especially when you consider it does not cost any $.
