Is there a risk in magnetic fan filters?

938 Views 14 Replies 12 Participants Last post by  sLowEnd
I am looking at cases and some do not have filters. I found some filters for sale that re magnetic which sounds like a great idea, so there is no drilling or excessive modding. But can I safely use a magnetic fan filter to filter the hdd cage on say an antec 900 or an AZZA Solano? Magnets and hdds have a rocky past but these filters are on computer websites and most if not all front intake fans that could need a filter are next to the hdd. I feel I am being over cautious but if my magnetic fan filter was within an inch or two of my hdd would the magnet be strong enough to cause storage issues?

That's too close for comfort IMO. If it wasn't in such close proximity to hardware then it would be a great idea.
Magnets pose absolutely no risk to hard drives. They even have one inside.

I have no idea what the hell these filters are supposed to accomplish though.
no harm..i have modified my case so that the side panel is held properly by a neodium magnet clamp
(neodium is very powerful)..no troubles..

I have five of those on my HAF 932 intakes. Great stuff, cut down the dust inside by a dustload.

My 8800 Ultra gets more dust built up sitting outside on a shelf then inside my case.
no problem until its really powerful magnet
as the HDD is covered with steel casing

No fan motors have permanent magnets in them too. It's how they spin. I wouldn't really worry about it since unless it's a really powerful magnet it won't cause any issues.
There is no risk, however they obviously won't work on aluminium cases

Still, they seem a little bit of a gimmick when normal mechanical fixings work fine.

I can say for sure that they pose no risk whatsoever to hardware. I can also attest to how well they work. I have 2 cats now, and with three of these (two on the front intakes and one on the side) on my Antec 900, they have cut down the amount of cat hair AND dust that would normally accumulate in such a 'breezy' case. I have all of my fans on high, and have noticed no reduced airflow.

I HIGHLY recommend them.

The magnets used still work without power.

You can actually stick little screws onto them.
