So I'm browsing through the egg.. drooling over displays that I'm not going to buy..

when I come across this samsung.

23" and it is putting out 2048 x 1152? I've had my eyes on a 24 to 26" samsung for a long while now to replace my old dell 1905....

Yes, I realize it's a TN panel.. but still, I just didn't you could squeeze that many pixels into a 23" lcd.

PS: forgive me for any typos or grammatical errors, I'm blaming it on Ron Bacardi.

Yeah, 2048x1152 is just a hair wider and hair shorter than a 1920x1200.

The most I've seen in a panel is the 22" from IBM that is 3840 x 2400.
yeah 2048x1152 is the equivalent of 1920x1200 in a different aspect ratio. 16:9 i think.
And that is dirt cheap, great find, + rep. All new LCDs will start being that res its cheaper to make that aspect ratio, they get more screens for less $ that way.
I guess the 2048 is what threw me off a bit. I'm eyeing a 1900x1200 samsung right now, but I would almost imagine that the pixel pitch would be better on this smaller screen? I'm looking at the 2443BWX or the 2693 at the moment.

2048x1152 is 16:9, 1920x1080 is 16:9. 1920x1200 is 16:10.

I've seen them for $150 after rebate, $180 before rebate, so it's not as low as they have been.

I think I'm still going to stick around until I can get my hands on a 24" 1920X1200.. but this isn't a bad lcd. I'm assuming there might some stretching with games that couldn't adhere to the 16:9... but it could be worse, right?

What's up with the awkward resolution? Did Samsung do it just because they can?

Yes, I know what the aspect ratio is of this monitor, I just don't get why they made it? Maybe so you can view like 2 documents side by side with the vista sidebar or something.

maybe because 1920x1080 is lower than 1920x1200, so to have a 16:9 monitor with a resolution more comparable to 1920x1200.

I'd assume with the transition to an all digital format, the general public is going to see "16:9" a bit more in the media/sales pages. It might be a niche market, but I don't see any reason for Samsung to not capitalize on it. Think about it, we know that 16:10 is standard, but everyday folks are more comfortable with 16:9. They see it on every DVD in walmart... on every TV in bestbuy.. etc.

it's fo real. i'm using it right now. they sold out at fry's fast.

PICTURES

de facto industry standard now is 16:9, they'll be doing away with 16:10 and start standardizing screen ratios. that way when you view digital media you wont see black bars on top and bottom of a 16:10 screen.

I've seen that monitor in person. I almost bought it over my 2443BW.

Its ridiculously wide btw. The start button on the task bar is so far away from the clock that it almost looks like you're running dual monitors.

It is really cheap though, and if my monitor hadn't been on sale for the same price at the time I probably would have gotten it.
so with the 16:9 vs the standard 16:10 that most games support... I wonder how l4d would translate
Steam games have no problem with 16:9, it's built in as a resolution.

As to why they choose that pixel count... 16:9 panels are cheaper to produce, 2048x1152 is most likely a size that is cheaper to produce that 1920x1080 (pixel per pixel). Plus you have the aspect of marketing a unique and seemingly huge panel size.

really 16:10 is pointless if you think about it, since dvds/ blu rays/ xbox/ ps3 all these popular formats all use 16:9 ratio's. Thats why my next monitor is going to be 16:9 since it won the ratio war.

There was a war?

I like having a slightly taller monitor, and don't mind black bars at all while watching something in 1080p. To each his own though I suppose.
