I would read some reviews before I got the Abit motherboard. My last one, which was a socket 939, was not that great.

CPU looks good, but I would go with the 4400+ because of the 1Mb L2 cache per core. The 4200+ has half that.

Get 2GB of ram. Especially if this is a gaming PC.

Video card looks good, though I would wait for DX10 to come out. That should be sometime next month, which means in February. Maybe get something like a 7600GT to hold you over till then.

Hmm, I can't afford the 2 Gig of RAM, even though I racked my account and my part time job to get where I am now, and I've never trusted nVidia. What motherboard would you recommend, and if I wanted to get everything now (which I do) then what would you recommend?

If you cant get 2 gigs now then get a good 1 gig stick and upgrade later . . . i agree with the 4400+ upgrade. . .or also look at optys .. i was going to go with the 4400+ myself but ended up taking the opty 170 route. . i love it. . . as far as the vid, i would get a decent card to tie you over for a year, save some $$, sell it and get a good DX10 about this time next year when the tech has been in the field for a while.

I'm not the best with GPUs. Could you enlighten me on what a DX10 is?

I would agree, a 1GB stick would be much better for the future. Also, either an X2 4400+ or an Opteron 1210 would probably be a better proccessor to have, especially if in the hands of a good overclocker like yourself

imo, id spend alittle more on the Ram and Motherboard, and spend alittle less on the video card and processor. let me explain.

The ram is crucial to your system, and without some decent 2Gigs of it, you wont be able to overclock very high. The motherboard as well, if you skimp on the motherboard, you wont get that high of a overclock.

The processor CAN be overclocked, thats why I say skimp. Processor technology comes out pretty frequently, so the next best thing is just around the corner.

The video card, like the processor, can also be overclocked. Video card technology comes out VERY frequently as well, and price jumps from month to month are outrageous. For example, i was looking at a 6800 about a year ago for my AGP system. the card cost about 200 USD (ebay), and now on ebay, can go for a mere 100.

But regardless, that is still quite a good system you have, and i hope that you make the best choice in your opinion. my 2 cents.

hey you guys hes talking am2 rig here, the am2 4400 has 2x512mb l2 cache, the only oneof the lower speed guys that have 2x1mb are the am2 4000 and the opties until you get up higher like the am2 5200 and the 62 which are pretty pricey

Not trying to be the fanboyish type here, but fans are rarely a reliable piece of equipment, and that's not really a good reason to boycott GPU makers... At the furthest maybe the fan maker. Just trying to keep your options open.
