Im certain about the decision between either of these two, cause they fit my needs and are cheap but still have the power to do stuff. The question is which one do I go with? Basically is an i3 worth $64 over the Athlon II x2? Thanks

Im leaning on this cause its ~$416

I wanna make sure I dont regret not getting this @ ~$470

How good could either of these play games too? Gaming is def not my main concern but if I pick up an mmo again it would be nice.

Get the i3. Will be much better, both in CPU and GPU performance. You'll be glad you did.

Thanks for your input, sorting on newegg by lowest price shows these as the better buys. I really dont want to go more than that $470 one, since my dad is paying for it. I also dont want a netbook cause I like the big screen.

My main use for this is just word processing, skype, webcam, internet and like i said an mmo is a possibility but not important.

So i3 is worth the extra bit of money then... Wonder if the i3 one is really pink or if thats just the picture...

edit- 2 for i3, OK sounds promising, I'll go with that one
thanks guys!

No problem
Looks more like light brown to me
Good news too, you can upgrade the processor in your notebook as well, so when you save up some cash you can upgrade to a better dual-core such as an i7-620M which I've seen go for $150 and i5's for around $100.
Manual here: http://bizsupport1.austin.hp.com/bc/.../c02439213.pdf (Page 83 is processor information).

Also here is what games you'll be able to play:
http://www.notebookcheck.net/Intel-G...D.23065.0.html
Scroll down a bit and you'll see some game benchmark results.

Not in this case. The 4250 and Intel GMA HD are very close in performance and due to the i3 being a MUCH better architecture than the Athlon II the performance win goes to the i3 this time.

The x2 is a good cpu, the i3 is better though

BUT the amd 4250 is MUCH MUCH better than the intel 4500 onboard IGP

try this? -

or

http://configure.us.dell.com/dellsto...03&lid=1342491

2nd gen i3

check www.dealnews.com everyday for deals. i got an i5 laptop 500gb 4gb 6490 for 595.

Thats a big jump in price
For $100 you can spend that on 4 gigs of ram + a 500 gig HD and keep your old ram + hd and have change left over

Those others are pushing it, I really cant afford any higher which is why im settling on either of the two I listed. I bought the i3 one, though it isnt too late to cancel order if I change my mind

So the i3's better processing outweighs the slightly better graphics of the 4250 then is what i get?

According to what you want to do.

I would've chosen the amd/ati combo for a better gaming/video laptop.

The AMD is a good processor, and the i3 is a better processor

The 4250 is a much better GPU than the integrated 4500 (which uses system ram)

Also the AMD processor has Windows Pro and the i3 had Premium

Well, I'd like it to be well rounded, im not going to be like photo editing or video editing. Maybe the athlon is good enough for my simple use. The $64 is in the back of my mind too, cheaper is better after all... Why must these decisions be so tough lol

Does it have to be HP? Check this gateway for $399 out:

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...sp?EdpNo=55235

The i3 on the HP is still a tad faster and the HD is slower but you do get twice as much ram for 65 dollars less.

It's easily superior to the AMD based Hp model even with the slower HD.

Thanks but I cant deal with the slower HD, my dad has a slower HD in his new laptop and when I use it it constantly hangs on the HD with a solid light :x I think im pretty happy with the buy
so thanks all for your input it really did help!

Some of the newer 5400 rpm hds are faster than the older 7200

Well for your uses even the AMD based HP is sufficient.

It's plenty fast for the run of the mill stuff that you will be using the laptop for mostly though for the price difference I'd still go with the i3 if I had to choose between those 2 HP models (the cpu up-gradedability that Mr. Alex mentions is also a nice extra).

True enough. From the reviews that gateway model has gotten it seems like it feels pretty snappy, 5400 rpm HD and all (also helps that since it has 4GB of memory Windows can have a larger disk cache than a 2GB system).

Also if you take the $70 in savings you can get a nice 2.5" 7200 rpm hd and still have the 5400 as a backup

....... but I hate gateway and tigerdirect
