Is TRIM That Important?

1608 Views 25 Replies 15 Participants Last post by  KipH
i'm beginning to feel like i brought the wrong deal, a week ago newegg had a promotion and i brought the gen 1 intel SSD 80gb x18m for $190, but after some research i found it it does not support the up coming TRIM support. the new gen 2 is currently sold out everywhere but the guarantee price is 250,

i guess my question should be. just how effective is trim. and does a gen 1 intel really loses around 40-50 percent performance after the first memory cycle?

From what I've read, TRIM will allow your SSD to be almost as fast as it was when you first bought to when its about to die.

Wikipedia has some good information in it, but basically TRIM tells the SSD which blocks are flagged as "deleted" so it can rewrite them without checking first.
right now i can rma for a full refund, and get the gen 2 for 250 when it's available. is that a good choice?

I there are programs like wiper.exe that will essentially do the same thing, just not in real time. Just run the program once a wk, and you'll be fine.

really? and it works with intel SSD? sweet dude you just saved me 60 bucks, repped!
Oh yeah, didn't think of that.

CCleaner has the option of wiping empty space as well.

so there are a number of programs out there that will work just as good as TRIM and it can be used on the first gen intel ssd?
As of now, TRIM does not work on the G2. The firmware was pulled a month ago because it was bricking drives.
so would the wiper.exe(ocz) and the CCleaner be able to use with first GEN intel ssd?
Yup.

Or you can do nothing, like I do, and be happy with your X25 G1. There may be a measurable difference in performance, but it's not *noticeable*..

Read the SSD anthology on Anandtech. it will explain everything.... and yes, trim is important, no the old intel drives cant do it, Wiper.exe as far as i know is OCZ drives ONLY. http://www.ocztechnologyforum.com/fo...play.php?f=186 go here for much more info on SSD's than you can find on this forum.

Wiper is not strictly for OCZ its for idilinx base SSD. You should look at Tony Trim that maintains any SSD drives. Here is the guide for Tony Trim.

blah already went ahead and brought the x25m gen 2 for 239 on zipzoomfly, is it possible to do raid 0 with an x18m(gen1) and gen2 x25m?
I would guess so, but TRIM support is currently disabled in RAID configurations even between two G2 drives.

TRIM doesn't support Raid.

oh joy, i guess i'll be returning the x18m. unless someone here wants to buy it for 190.
I thought this thread might pertain to your problem... although it appears solved.

I'm not a fan of SSDs myself; I'll think more seriously about getting one when they iron out all the bugs and the price comes down.

Does anybody know if it ever be? Or is it something that's physically imposable?

The OS's RAID drivers would have to support it. So don't expect it to happen for a couple of years, if ever.

The best solution for RAID SSD's right now are the new OCZ drives with 1.41 GC firmware. GC (Garbage collection) is essentially TRIM implemented at the firmware level and works with both RAID and standalone.
