The connection is only fast as the slowest Bottleneck (Ie you package)

i have a wireless pci card sitting here claiming to be 2.4ghz/54mbps
when i installed it i can get 11mbps but thats on other ppls conection,never bothered to try to dl somthin because i couldnt figure out how to get my wireless system running plus im paying for internet and didnt see the point in using others conection

Wired, right now, is faster than wireless. Wireless is just convenient if you have a laptop, or a ton of devices that need internet; and you don't have your house wired for networking.
55 mb/s for wireless g would be in a perfect scenario with a perfect signal, while still probably not reaching it.
Even with the 55 mbps on your internal network, you would still be bottlenecked by your actual internet connection (ie, if you paid for 5 mbps downrate / 512 kb uprate, you would be limited to that speed even if you had wireless g at 55MB.
Now, most modems are 10/100mb/ps standard, which will operate at 10/ or 100 mbps. (practically everything now is 100, or even 1000 mbps for wired. (I haven't seen modems for 1000mbps yet)
If you had internet that ran at 50 mbps, you would get that 50 mbps on your wireless (in ideal conditions.
So in a nutshell, If I have some massive downloading to do, I use the rig that's hardwired, and my wireless for simple tasks like posting here
