OC.net member TX12 and myself have discovered how to identify which R9 290's unlock through some simple software.
This works for ALL BRANDS, check them even if you have been told that brand doesnt unlock!
Using this tool we have found even HIS and Sapphire cards that unlock!!!

First Sapphire card unlocked!

UPDATED HAWAIIINFO12.EXE 11/23/13 1:07pm
detailed reading and multiple adapter (CrossFire) support.

Hawaiiinfo must be extracted into the MemoryInfo folder as it utilizes some of its files.
Run Hawaiiinfo and observe the results.

LOCKED R9 290's will report R1: F8010005 or F8200005

UNLOCKABLE R9 290's will report R1: F8000005

If your card shows F8000005 then go here to flash your card:

Not sure if it unlocks, haven't tried it, but it's a Sapphire R9 290 card, so I doubt it.

Thanks for the contribution, first sapphire for this collection. I am noting a different R1 reading so I dont think it will unlock and noone else has managed to unlock a sapphire..
So far only F8000005 readings unlock.

Im super curious for a genuine 290X owner to run this software and post back.
I think we will find real 290X's read R1 F8000005 as well.

Im feeling pretty confident about my hypothesis of R1 F8000005 being indicative of an unlockable card.
Powercolor, XFX, and even 3D manufactured cards that are unlockable all have shown R1 state of F8000005.
Locked cards have shown two different readings but have never shown F8000005.

Indeed, more results are needed to see the difference between chips.
Also it would be useful if someone will prove memory brand detection is OK or faulty. It's strange to see only Elpida's for now. So maybe it's just bugged now.
No problem, I had a hunch based on the preliminary results a few people had in the other thread and now im almost positive that R1: F8000005 shows an unlockable card.
Im pretty sure memory is being read properly, both programs indicated the same for me.
It just seems like alot of cards have Elpida

Elpida RAM.
Are you sure your unlocked?
I saw earlier today that you said you could not unlock your card and your R1 state indicates it should be locked.
Perhaps you could upload a screenshot of hawaiiinfo and GPUZ open showing the unlocked shaders?

I think you need to test each of the GPU's individually, so remove one from X fire and re-run Hawaiiinfo then swap and run Hawaiiinfo again.

No, that's only about 1st card and it's unlockable. Swap cards or test them one by one to get results about the second one.

I'll upload the third later. still working on CFX issues. Hope this helps and i do think you're on to something here. I can tell you that it is not the VER 1.1 because all three of R9 290 are VER 1.1 with serials OXU044xxx, OWU055xxx, OWU055xxx.
