Isn't there a way to trade in for w7?

Ok, so I think I've seen this before, but I'm asking to make sure. Isn't there a way to trade in the os on a computer that you've bought? I would like to know because I got my laptop like 2004 (which is a long time ago). And I thought I read something that said you could get a copy of w7 if you got vista, or something like that.

MS will be offering free W7 upgrades to some OEM sold Vista machines.

MS will be selling W7 upgrade packages like it did with XP to Vista.
what do you mean by "some OEM sold Vista machines"?
If you bought a laptop 2 months before Win 7 comes out, when Windows 7 does come out you send in a certificate to get your copy of Win 7. Your laptop is too old to qualify for that.

There is (was?) a promotion where if you bought a qualifying laptop from an OEM, you were entitled to a free upgrade to W7. Had to be purchased between certain dates and from certain OEMs. (was recent too, so you are not covered)

As Duckie stated, there will be upgrades available which is most likely your cheapest option.

I wonder if this offer would apply to my barebones laptop and OEM Vista that I just bought.

If you did not get a coupon or anything stating that it did, then you don't. It is a marketing/selling point.
