Issue with some new ram.

Hi All!

I'm new to overclocking and hence new to overclock.net. It looks to be a great forum and I'm excited to be a part of it.

I just bought a new system and am having issues with my ram. Here are the specs of the relevant parts of the system:

*Core i7 920
*Asus P6T
*G.Skill F3-12800CL9T-6GBNQ (3x2GB, DDR3-1600 9-9-9-24)

I put the system together and found my ram to behave strangely from the start. I am seeing a crap shoot as to any of these 3 scenarios:

*POST 6GB and I see 3GB at OS
*POST 4GB and I see 3GB at OS
*POST 2GB and I see 2GB at OS

Although I've been doing some conservative overclocking, I'm seeing this behavior at factory specifications as well. This behavior happens both in Ubuntu Intrepid and WinXP.

My main two choices were the G.Skill I bought or Corsair TR3X6G1600C9. I went with the G.Skill because of hearing good things about it from forums and friends, although Corsair is a name I know and trust. My criteria were; on the QVL, 6gigs on 3 dimms, relatively fast.

So...am I doing something wrong in my BIOS, or should I have gone with the Corsair (or maybe even something else)? Could this potentially not even be a RAM issue to begin with?

I'm totally in the dark here, and ask for your collective wisdom. Thanks a lot!

32 bit OS only recognize up to 3.25 gb of Ram.

Thanks! That was definitely my OS issue on all accounts...now if I could just get all my memory to POST...

Got it! The [Auto] setting for my dimm voltage was setting it too low. I set it to the ram spec and it works like a charm.

That is exactly what I was going to advise you to check on. Also, check to make sure that the specified timings of the RAM are set accordingly in your bios.

Almost all DDR2 RAM over 800MHz requires that you set the voltage and timings manually in bios...I'm assuming that this is the case with a lot of DDR3 RAM as well.
