Issues trying to OC with Vista x64 Ultimate

650 Views 14 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  thlnk3r
I have found it impossible to do any sort of OC'ing with my version of windows. Each time I try to change the CPU frequency, CPU voltage, or Ram timings windows won't load, I get stuck at the loading windows vista screen. Also, after I revert back to stock settings in BIOS and I load Vista, I get a message saying that windows has recovered from a serious error. I've been successful OC'ing with Xp 32 bit but I don't know why there should be a difference in results. Anyone have any clue what's up?

Personally, I lost ~25 MHz switching from Vista x86 to x64.

However, it is weird that you can't OC at all.

You can't even change the CPU voltage?

Maybe your Vista install is borked.

It's not vista. it's the OC's stability. Well sounds like it anyways.
I OCed on both vista 32 and 64.
Edit: you could also try OCing to what you want on XP, then once you're *100% sure its stable, format and install fresh vista. see how it goes.

*Theres no such thing as 100% sure but you get the idea.

I've found a stable OC and was able to run Prime95 for 24 hours but I can't even reinstall. I ran into issues while trying to install it the first time and still have those same problem. I can't have anything OC'd or any other harddrive plugged in when I try to install Vista or it either won't load the setup or it freezes part way through the install. I'm really thinking it's my mobo and some crappy **** they have on the board.
Make sure you install Vista with only one stick of ram installed. It'll be even better if you put a 1 GB stick in.
This thread is a few days old but I thought I'd bring it back to life.

Fireforge_32, what kind of overclock did you have with Windows XP 32-bit? After the installation of Vista 64-bit did you change your power management settings to "High Performance"? Obvious question here but did you make sure all the appropriate drivers were installed for the 64-bit OS?

Good luck

I think it might just have to do with your "Extra Crappy Systems" board, i've never seen any oc be stable out of one of their boards, except my 754 board from them that i hacked with a Biostar bios. LOL. I think their bios programmers are just horrible at their jobs.

If your using vistax64, there is a patch that is required if you want to run more than 2 gb of ram (not sure if they included it in sp1) I saved a copy of the patch just because i knew i'd need it sometime, so if you want a copy pm me.

Everytime i install vista64 i have to pull out my ram and i drop a 1gb stick of ddr2 800 in it, get it installed, put in the patch, then put my real ram back in and put my oc back.
Did you make sure your ram was at its specified voltage prior to your vista installation?
Good suggestions guys.

Fireforge_32, I guess another good question would be....were you even able to run Vista 64-bit at stock settings? I apologize for the dumb questions but I have to ask them

Good luck

wow..so i've been so busy with school as of late that I totally forgot about this site. I feel kinda bad...
A status update tho: Vista has officially stopped loading for me. I went completely barebones in terms of my setup and swapped ram from my 4 gigs to a 1 gig pair that i had lying around(ddr2-800). I tried 3 different harddrives but after i initially got vista installed it never loaded. My bios settings don't have very many power management options or, in fact, anything of much use. I used default bios settings after the initial complete failure to load vista and finally, in anger towards Microsoft, made my machine a hackintosh. I'm still interested in figuring out this problem tho cause i want to overclock in vista x64. I did call tech support for the mobo once but they just told me i'd have better luck buying a different, more expensive mobo of theirs. hope someone is still there that might be of help

Fireforge_32, see my above posts (#8 and #11). Were you running everything at stock settings (no overclock)? Have you performed a diagnostic on your memory to make sure it's running correctly? I recommend running Memtest86+. Download the .iso and burn it to a CD. Boot directly to the CD. I recommend running tests 5 and 8 each for at least 20-25 minutes.

Let us know

Good luck

In all my attempts to get Vista to load I never had anything OC'd and have run several memory diagnostics including the one you recommend. I ran tests on the harddrives to check for errors and even used multiple bios versions. Used different sata cables and even stress tested my power supply to see if that might be an issue. None of the things I tried worked. The OC i was(and am) running is 2.96GHz. As for the power management settings I did change the power management settings to high performance and had all the appropriate drivers installed.

Fireforge_32, have you considered the issue being more related to driver support then hardware? I'm assuming with Vista 64-bit you are required to install 64-bit version drivers.

Good luck
