Intel to freeze top guys' pay

Chip making giant Intel plans to freeze the salaries and exchange employee stock options of senior executives. But other employees get a chance to exchange expensive stock options for lower-priced ones.

According to the company's Securities and Exchange Commission filing, its net income was reportedly down by 24 per cent in 2008. Intel has decided to halt pay hikes to compensate the loss. However, the workers can exchange ‘underwater’ stock options for ones with lower prices, and the freeze does not affect non-cash compensation such as stock-option grants.

Last year Intel CEO Paul Otellini has earned a total compensation of $12.1 million - roughly the same as...

Wow. $12.1 Million last year.

11.1 Million came from stocks / incentives ... do want.
No one, I repeat NO ONE, needs that kind of money. It's such a huge waste of money that could be used in other ways.

You should be able to live an entire life, buying almost whatever you want, off of 2 million (Probably even 1 million).
EDIT: OK, maybe in my state... but not in the majority of states.

No one needs 20 cars, 4 houses, and the best of the best in every room of those 4 houses. Oh, and 4 pools and a private jet.

Not if you want a house.

A very large, custom built and designed, 3 story house around here cost $300,000-$500,000. Which is total overkill in everyway IMO. That still leaves 1.5 million.

If you live 70 years $2 million is $28 thousand a year. That's not that much.

That's not the case where I live.

Even a piece of junk house like mine will net $500k

Houses like that where I live would easily be a million.

Then there's the whole factor of children. That in itself ends up costing a fortune.

same- where I live, a matter of fact, 4 years ago we sold an 1100 sqft 1bedroom 1 bath apartment with one parking space for 330k
Jeeze. Prices in Iowa must be alot lower than most other places. That's to be expected though.

I live off of 27,000/year and can still afford a top of the line computer, and a top of the line home theater system along with my 1 story, 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom house (House was $74,000). I drive a 06 Malibu, so nothing special there.. the thing has zero power, lol.

Thats insane, I think you guys also make more money on average than we do so it might equal out. I live in a very good neighborhood, in one of the larger cities in Iowa, and as I said in my previous post.. house was only $74,000.

Prices are indeed lower in Iowa, which is fine because wages are lower, it's all relative. So $28k/year is fine depending on where you live. Regardless, no matter where you live, you don't need 12+ million/year. Companies that pay those kinds of wages just don't care about their customers, but at the same time, they don't have to, it's capitalism. Pay whoever, whatever, as long as you're making a product that people are willing to buy, and doing it legally (which they weren't).

you think thats insane? i used to life in orange county california. think of this
connecticut(new haven country) 6,400sqft 3 acres=800,000
california(orange country)2,600sqft 1/4 acres =1,000,000

anyways i know people hate on the CEOs and what not but still... some people are going to make the money. we just hope its not politicians =]

It's pretty bad here, cheapest house you can buy here is approx 400-500k, tax for a 8000 sq. ft. property is close to 10k/year

good thing my parents moved here early before the housing bloom (over 14 years ago) heh. we bought our first house here for 220k, sold it last year for 800k

but on topic, i think those people with $12+ million salaries are just in it for "competition" amongst each other. Surely, they dont need all that money, but i'm thinking that those people have some sort of "look how much money do i make doing nothing every year" contest

Where I currently live a 2 bedroom run down house will cost you 300,000+. It just depends on the cost of living in your area. If I were in New York I would not want to know what things would cost. Besides who cares if they make that much money it's not like the government owns them and frankly who wouldn't take that money if it were offered to them. I would hope though that those high payed execs give something back to the community once in a while.

They worked "hard" for their money. If it was "easy" then everyone would be "rich".
If he makes 12 million, you can be damn sure it's because other people benefit from it as well and get more than that. If his stocks go up in price, so do all the other shareholder's. He's not being payed 12 million to manage a hundred bucks after all.
