[ITS] Windows 7 DWM cuts memory consumption by 50%

If you didn’t think the performance benefits of using Aero Glass could get any better, then see this. At PDC 2008, Anantha Kancherla presented a session on “Windows 7: Writing Your Application to Shine on Modern Graphics Hardware†where he presented a mindblowing fact about the Windows 7 Desktop Window Manager.

Because Windows 7 can take better advantage of the GPU and uses the Direct3D 10.1 API, it is able to reduce reduce memory consumption (in the graphics system) by 50% per each window rendered. On top of that, this is also what enables the much richer animation and styling of the interface like the “color hot-track†feature. Pretty cool huh.

I'll give Windows 7 a miss if they're not going to restrict DirectX again. It took me a year to go Vista (mainly spurred on by x64 and not trusting XP's flavour). I'm pretty sure I'll stick with Vista till Microsoft starts threatening not to support it.
Plus, I'm heading more towards open-source as the weeks go by - why line Microsoft's pockets when you can do most things for free?

From what I hear its not going to be any crazy change from vista but more of an upgrade. If all the rumors are true then you will want to get this (especially if it performs the way people say). Boot times are suppose to be super fast and performance is suppose to be way better than vista. That was the main reason people didnt switch when it came out.

Wonder if Vista drivers will work on Windows 7.

Well they're saying the hardware reqs are all based off Vista so there shouldn't be any problem with those drivers

they also have said they are still using Vistas Kernal etc so Drivers/Apps should work fine but still you never know what they could changed during the Beta Stage apps may work but will still have bugs, or they will work great with nps

I'm loving vista, so i can't wait to get my msdnaa copy of windows 7 x64 in my university when it coms out =D
Who cares if the DWM scales? Any DX10.1 GPU can easily handle Aero or whatever they will be calling it.

Why would they?...

Less GPU memory used by DWM is more for the games.

Ah. Looks like I'm guna have to sell half my ram from my 300 rig when I move to Windows 7.
dx10.1 does that mean gtx280/260 cards won't be able to run it?

It will be on only if available (meaning only if your hardware supports it.) Other then that i would expect it to run regular DX10. Doubt it would support 9.
