Just crossfired but one card is only 8x

854 Views 24 Replies 12 Participants Last post by  Riou
I jus installed my XFX hd4890 yesterday and crossfired it with saphire hd4890
with saphire being my master card.

My q is:

When i go in Everest master card (saphire) shows as:
Bus TypePCI Express 2.0 x16 @ x8

And second card XFX shows as:
Bus TypePCI Express 2.0 x16 @ x16

What do i need to do in order to bring first card x16 too?

I have MSI 790FX-GD70 as mobo and it shud run two cards with 16x and four cards with 8x

Any help will be appreciated.

move em around in slots make sure you got he right 16 slot.
What motherboard is it? Most of the time, when the second slot is occupied, the Lanes change to x8/x8.

MSI 790FX-GD70

According to their specs it runs x16 when two cards are installed.

Funny thing is second card, XFX, reads as x16

Yeah, sorry, I reread your post, then checked the moBo specs, then edited my post to read:

NVM, I'm a doofus.

But my browser hung on me and the edit was lost, lol.

I don't know how to get the second card to x16, but honestly, it should have plenty of bandwidth at x8.
Check what slots you have them in, you most likely have to have them in specific places.

My board gives me only 8x when I put my card, by itself, in the wrong slot.
Second and third slots were the best ones to plug them in.

I checked my bios but there was not setting in there.

Whichever card it is, it should be fine at x8. I don't know if it was a 4890, or if they had to go to the 5000 series, but when someone tested x8 vs x16, they only found about a 5% difference. That's why all those chips have gotten away for so long with reverting to x8/x8. It's only now that we're starting to get past it.

Now, it's certainly worth your while to figure out why your chipset isn't performing as expected, but don't stress out about your video card being 'starved' of bandwidth.
What color slots are you using? Are there instructions to use specific slots for x16+x16 mode?
Check your manual.
a 4890 in x8 is fine enough i am using it with a 4870 no worries
