Just got my GA-EP45-UD3P need RMA?

846 Views 16 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  D.J.S.
Just installed my new mobo, but when i turned on my system, it would just cycle reboot forever, never reaching the bios screen. I fiddled around for a while, and was finally smart enough to pull out one stick of ram, so that my other one remained. Voila, that was the culprit, I could boot fine and go into windows, i tried upping all the mch volts and such, but still going into dual channel on the ram is a no go. Both stick are working just fine, and they will work together in single channel (although they press right against each other so i worry abit about their temps. Does it sound like i need to RMA this bad boy, I would be ever so dissapointed.

Here are my vitals:

IMHO I'd ask for a RMA and get a replacement.

Static Tread Value must be at least 9 to be stable normally on the 400 MCH Strap, and of course you need the normal 52-62 trfc and MCH Voltage applied. Performance enhance on standard as you have it.

Stock Pll will do you fine at that speed, and may be part of your issue as well. Use driving strength profile of 1066 for 900 Ram speed, it will work better for you

Thank you sir, you truly are a gentleman. I tried out your settings, and everything seems more stable, I only had a few minutes this morning, but didn't have time to try the dual channel ram. I was able to boot into windows and restart though, which is significant, because before i could get into windows but if i restarted it would hard fail a few times at post and reset the bios. I will give it a thourough testing and tweaking tonight and post my results. My question though, isn't it weird or a bad sign if my board couldn't run at all stock settings with dual channel ram? Reps for you.
I noticed your DRAM voltage is 2.3V

That is very high for RAM, keep it around 2.1.. for DDR2 1000 I only need 2.05v even when spec says 2.1v

Also, have you run memtest86?

Enable these settings, you need them
Virtualization Technology [Disabled]
No-Execute memory Protect [Disabled]

The first one you must enable. Its a very good tool for running specific Virtualization services that are used by some graphics and server-level software based off linux.

The 2nd one is a windows option used by data security and anti virus, it enables windows to prevent programs from executing on areas of memory/bits of which it does not have permission to do so. This could theoretically and potentially save your computer from being vulnerable to annihilation by virus.

Whoops yeah that ram should say 2.1, haven't run memtest yet, really haven't had much time to test everything out, will hopefully get plenty of time tonight. I'll be sure to enable those settings, got disable happy in that menu. Any thoughts on the stock settings not handling dual channel ram, is it suspect for RMA? Rep for you.

I'd get the system stable at stock before I'd go overclocking, get used to the board and settings, then go nuts on clocking.

lol yeah i know i got ahead of myself, but as soon as I realized that dual channel wasn't going to work at stock, or with a simple tweak to the mch, I figured I'd be RMAing anyway, so just when straight for the OC. Still have yet to determine if dual channel will work at all. Is anyone not surprised that it would have these problems at stock? I mean my p35 didn't have these problems booted right up the first time with the exact same hardware.
You should never have to raise your mch ever on p45 in fact it does not work with volts
youre only going to burn out the NB . The NB is designed to do 600 + on stock volts
and ddr2 and 3 upto the highest speeds and amounts so far to date.

Yeah, I was hoping to not have to tweak the mch at all. To be honest i was just copying someone elses template, who also had a q9550 e0, they were stable with a 500mhz fsb, really didn't have time last night for anything serious, but after having problems with the ram just decided to go straight for his settings, just to check if the board would take it, but as LSD pointed out i did miss a few key settings. I'll try giving it a thorough testing tonight. I'll just be really irritated if it needs an RMA.
Well i was able to manage 4.0 stable, not liking my volts, wondering if they can be lowered or if i'm risking killing it soon. When i dropped the multi to 6 i couldn't get it to pass orthos without hiking up the mch to 1.6, i tried lots of stuff but this seems to be as good as I can do, any suggestions?

I found out in another forum that the ram thing is an issue with the specific type of ocz ram and this board, WHACK. Anyways, well I guess i will run it in single channel, IIRC dual doesn't really perform any better than single in real world performance?

Try adding 50-150 MCH Skew and less PLL (Like Stock)

I would advise you for sure to keep MCH under about 1.3-1.4, as said before it should not be needed but often is. 1.6 is for sure way to much

Be careful using settings from XS mate

They fry boards for fun over there.

I assume you flashed to the newest bios that is available for the board?

Thanks for the numbers, as above I changed the ones in red. Unfortunately orthos would fail in 5 seconds with anything under 1.5 mch. This appears to be stable though, which should allow me to bring down my cpu vcore. Let me know if you have anymore suggestions, and if I'm on the highway to the danger zone with that mch voltage.

Lol i didn't realize that. Im on the f4 bios, i read the f5 doesn't fix that ram issue, and some people prefer f4 for clocking so I hadn't changed it, am I being rediculous, should I have already changed it by now?

If your RAM will not sit in RMA and you have everything set up right then I do suggest calling ASUS and asking them about it, then ask for an RMA

As for the BIOS, I usually use the latest one, if I find some huge issue, I flash back to the previous version which I have done in the past

IE: There was a BIOS for my board that had video corruption issues that I was having with HDMI, Flashed BIOS and computer would constantly bluescreen... flashed back and computer was fine again.. make sure you keep versions of BIOS as well as a rewriteable disk handy
And never flash a BIOS when overclocked!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah no XS BIOS FOR U !! lol
I wouldnt suggest it either seeing as these guys are competing in the gigabyte udp 1500+ ddr2 competition and trading crazy bios with each other right now. That board is the sexha
