Just OC my PH2 to 3.8 with 1.5V. Will it stay?

I just OC my Phenom 2 940 to 3.8GHz and all I did was up the CPU Voltage to 1.5V. Can I expect it to stay here without crashing?
At idle the temps holds between 40C-43C. If I mess around with it a bit more, will I get the temps down a bit, or is this pretty good?

i doubt that will be stable... Temps will go crazy when you start loading it with the cooler you have, especially if your idle temps are in the low 40's). Try occt or prime95 to see what the temps get to or if it blue screens.

Here is a link if you don't have it already...

Occt and Prime95? I'm going to load up Crysis in DX10 and see how the temps are. Alright, I'm about to load the game and now temps are down between 36 and 38.
Yep.

P95: http://files.extremeoverclocking.com/file.php?f=103

OCCT: http://www.ocbase.com/perestroika_en/index.php?Download

FYI: You must have at least 2 hours of either one for it to be deemed stable (well mostly stable). I can run 15.5hrs of OCCT linpack and be rock stable (I can do 24/7 as well). For maximum heat, do linpack on OCCT.

let us know how it goes.

Alright, I got the game going and my computer crashed in about a minute. I'm back down to 3.4GHz. Can somebody give me some quick settings for an easy 3.6GHz?
Would not reccomend with that cooler. Get at least a Xigmatek S1283
Is my CPU cooler really that bad? It has kept my 3.4 down to 29C at times.
Honestly, just fork up the funds and get a lapped true from crazypc (no work involved, just like $19 extra) and then you have no more worries... I have a noctua in push pull and could only get a stable 4.0ghz with a fairly low ambient temp. 3.7ghz is as far as i have been able to get 24/7 prime/occt stable at regular temps (70F+) with the settings below:
bus speed= 200mhz
cpu volts= 1.50v
multi= 18.5

But again remember, this is with a push pull noctua which is one of the best air coolers on the market... I will have my lapped true in the mail tomorrow to test the differences between the stock true and the a lapped true, hopefully it will bring my temps down enough to get me that 24/7 3.9ghz overclock!
1. Get a new cooler.

2. Go back to stock, and slowly raise multi by 1 until you can no longer get into windows.

3. Once you can no longer get into windows, lower multi by .5 until you can, and then run a stress test (you will probably fail quickly). Slowly raise the vcore until you get stable. Work on the FSB now, and raise it by 5 Mhz a time. When you can no longer get into windows, then raise vcore and nb volts alittle.

honestly, no... It isn't a bad cooler, just isn't good enough to get you to a stable 3.6ghz+... There is a LOT of heat differences when loaded between 3.4ghz and 3.8ghz.

Can you post a link please?
Your idle temperatures do not matter. The only thing that matters is load temperatures. When running prime95 with large FFTs your processor should not go over 60C.

I'd recommend the following heatsinks:

(add an extra 120mm fan to the back)

i can run mine stable with stock cooler at 3.6 load temps up to 60c after 1 a hour full load stability test (don't do it)

Did you just tell someone on OCN to buy a prelapped CPU?

yup, is there something wrong with that? I mean seriously, after dumping over $1k in your system, whats another $19 to have it lapped and know its done right with no worries?

I've spent around $3,000 on my computer so far. Not with the current hardware, but I had a 9850, then a 9950, and now a PH2 940. Had an Asus M3A32-MVP Deluxe and a Radeon HD 3870 X2. And more RAM, and the sound card.

But yeah, I think that for now 3.4 will work.
You shouldn't even have to have your vcore that high for 3.4GHz. If you want 3.6 try it out with a tiny bit boost in vcore. Some guys are lucky enough to hit 3.6 on stock volts.
