According to a report from Korean-based news outlet, ETNews, SUMCO, a Japanese silicon wafer manufacturer responsible for over 60 percent of the world's supply, is planning on increasing prices by 20 percent in 2018. Then, another price increase is supposed to take place in 2019.

A quote from SUMCO CEO, Hashimoto Mayuki can be found in the report, in which he confirms the plans to raise prices. Silicon wafers are used widely in the tech world as the basis for DRAM, NAND flash, CPUs and GPUs. With demand increasing, prices are also going to increase.

SUMCO estimates that global wafer demands will rise to 6.6 million units a month by 2020. Given that the manufacturers can only deliver so much, demand will continue to outstrip supply, leading to price hikes.

Screw 'em. If it's too pricey I just won't buy. I wonder how long they will survive on suckers willing to shell out a grand for a phone.

Lots of people buy expensive phones. Some even multiple times per year. It happens.

People used to say that when video cards started to crest over $500. Now many people pay that and more. Not all. And I'm sure they'll have some rx580/gtx1060 level (comparitively) for people who don't want to.

i'm basically done buying processors and memory for the next few years...wishful thinking for carbon nanotubes in a few years?

Interesting. So these are the guys that actually manufacture the wafers? I thought a lot of big fabs make their wafers in house.. Wonder which fabs source their wafers from these guys. 60% is a pretty big number though.

A gamer can't just get a darn break. First RAM goes through the roof, then miners jack up grapics card prices, now silicon wafer company is telling us bend over and grab the counter with both hands. Hey guys, were going to pretend there is a shortage of sand so that we can under produce and raise price 20%... O'and by the way we project that this will be our most profitable year ever!

All this means is people will take longer to upgrade.

Any other industry.
Demand goes up. Supply increases, competition enters market and price comes down.
Computer industry. Demand goes up. Price goes up.

And do you know why that is?

It's because there's an astronomically high cost-of-entry into the silicon/wafer market.

You wouldn't believe how many apple fanboys and fangirls there are out there, actually believing the age-old ideology of "More expensive means better, guaranteed."

We only buy appreciating assets in order to make enough money to buy more depreciating assets.

It's actually getting cheaper to get a high end gaming laptop than it is to get parts for a desktop over here, bloody hell.

Here's a thought build another factory, or maybe some other billionaires/trillionaires can build their own factories since business seems to be very lucrative to keep prices down and competition up. Same bull every day.

Anyway, they can't afford to do that since they need to keep as many indoctrination technologies around, otherwise how are they going to easily and effectively spy or proliferate their propaganda to the sleeping masses.

Nope, there has to be a phone or a tablet in every hand. Prices will stay reasonable just on that account.

A breakthrough tech will be announced and wafers will go extinct. I mean they already have other technology, so use it. I thought after 5nm this old tech was not going to be viable anyway and they're already at 7nm. So stop the fear porn already!
