I don't know much about monitors but I'm looking to upgrade

I'm deciding between AH-IPS monitors

CROSSOVER New 27QW - $300

YAMAKASI DS270 - $350

Achieva Shimian QH2700-IPSMS Edge Eco -$340 (relatively lower brightness 330 cd/m)
Achieva Shimian QH2700-IPSMS Lite Edge - $370

CROSSOVER BLACK TUNE 2735AMG (H-IPS but only $340)
CROSSOVER BLACK TUNE 2755AMG - $395

Just wanted to ask a few questions to make my decision easier.

1. Can the silver trim on the bottom of the CROSSOVER New 27QW be removed? The image quality i'm assuming is just as good as the others i've listed but i hate that silver trim.

2. Am I going to see a difference between the H-IPS and AH-IPS panels? I know AH-IPS is newer but is it going to make a huge difference or will only people with trained eyes going to see the difference? I'm asking because I love the look of the CROSSOVER 2735AMG but the AH-IPS version is too expensive for me.

3. My current monitor is a regular LCD with 300 cd/m brightness. What will change if i jump to a 440 cd/m screen? Mainly concerned about eye fatigue and image quality (power consumption is meh)

4. Between ebay sellers dream-seller, green-sum, and accessorieswhole is there one who is more reliable or offers lower declared customs values?

Thanks in advance

IMHO you should pay a little bit extra for a ~$400-$460 Monoprice monitor. It's just a more reliable/reputable brand than the overseas ones, and you don't have to worry about import fees. Despite their shady name, Monoprice is actually a very high quality brand that I trust more than HP/Dell/Asus and such.

http://www.monoprice.com/Product?c_id=113&cp_id=11307&cs_id=1130703&p_id=10489&seq=1&format=2 (this one has a grade A panel with no defects whatsoever, unlike the Koreans).

Otherwise, what's wrong with a Qnix? An overclockable refresh rate is a huge plus, and they're cheap. PLS is equivalent to IPS for all practical purposes.

To answer your questions
1: Not sure about that

2: I'm not sure either, but the difference should be minimal. Motion might be slightly clearer due to the lower response time, and overall quality might be a little better, but it won't be night and day.

3: My Shimian has an adjustable backlight, most Korean monitors do. I like the extra brightness, it helps with the inherently low contrast of LCDs vs Plasma/CRT, but I do sometimes turn it down at night.

4: Dream-seller was the first one to sell these monitors, I got mine from him. No import fees, very good shipping. However that was a long long time ago, things may be different now.

Thanks for the feedback. I looked into the plasma deposition coating and from what I read, it makes bright colors look better at the tradeoff of having worse blacks.

For my personal use, I almost never use my monitor in a dark room. I have a huge window right behind me and my lights are always on at night. I'm assuming the disadvantage plasma-deposition coating will affect me less because of this.

The Qnix and X-star that I looked at were tempting in the beginning but they have a brightness of 300 cd/m. The main reason i see people getting these brands however are overclocking, and personally I have no intention of doing so.

Do you guys think it'll be more beneficial for me to get a brighter 400+ cd/m monitor in my situation? My current 300cd/m monitor works fine but i feel like it would be better for me to get a brighter monitor.

Any suggestions? I'm actually open to anything right now. Price is actually one of my bigger concerns. I'm willing to pay more but not for things that i won't notice very much.

For me, an ideal monitor would be ~$300
- i only need the dvi-d input
- decent looking frame and a stand that won't break.
- reliability
- something that's easy on the eyes

The closest i've found was the MONEX M27QSM which was perfect except for the fact that a review said it had a low PWM Dimming Frequency which can makes your eyes tired (i do all my school readings on my computer)

It's not just about being in a dark room, the contrast on IPS/TN LCDs is bad in general. Dark movies scenes, for instance, already look like black blobs on my glossy Achieva monitor, where the plasmas I've watched actually show detail there. If it makes blacks worse, I'd probably skip the Plasma Deposition coating unless you don't watch many movies or play games with dark scenes.
