For the hardcore Super Smash Bros. player that may not already know that the game's boss, Master Hand, is a playable character, well, it is. GameTrailers' newest episode of the myth-busting show Pop-Fiction explains, in video, the particulars of unlocking the disembodied gloved one, a surprising glitch that readers of the unofficial Smash Wiki probably are already aware of.
Something like that.

Master Hand.

Advancing to the stage selection screen without selecting a character loads the first character ID as a default (master hand).

It's Master Hand (the final boss)

You need a controller in port three; then you need to hold B & A over the name selection field before choosing a character and only do it for a brief second before releasing A and hitting it again.

At that point you'll advance to the Arena Choosing screen, and when you play you'll be master hand.

The Reason; When you do not select a character it chooses the first character in the code. Which is master hand; who is auto reserved for Player 3. Most likely because Melee was originally gonna be Co-Op

He didn't. He figured out how to advance to the map screen without selecting a character, then later found out that if you were in slot 3 it let you control master hand.

Busted a port or was screwing around with 3 controllers I'm guessing.

Probably because since the NES games have been able to decipher with controller port is being used and as far as I remember certain games required codes to be entered with the second controller port.
