L4D2, TF2, L4D Poor Performance in Windows 7?

Hey everyone!

So i fresh installed my Windows 7 Home Premium x64 on an Intel SSD and i have a Velociraptor that i put my games on. After a few months of playing i'm confused as to why i'm getting such poor performance compared to Vista Home Premium x64. I'm running Catalyst 9.10, as well...

L4D, TF2, L4D2 all used to run amazingly on my system on highest settings. Now i'm running everything near low settings and i'm getting some weird frame rates, like in the ranges of 20-30 on all games.

I tried checking the integrity of all the games, and i've popped open the console to check my rates. Everything appears fine. Nothing is OC'd yet on my computer (waiting for a 4870 to arrive any day now), so i know that isn't the problem either.

I'm beginning to think maybe i just need to delete the local content and redownload. I should mention that i backed up the games previously using the Steam backup utility and then reinstalled when i got 7 up and running.

What do you guys think? Considering my system specs, something is acting up kinda funny...

I'm not familiar with SSDs though but maybe check out how W7 works with SSDS
the ssd is fine. I made sure it's not being indexed and defragged.
almost forgot to mention:

I'm using catalyst 9.10 and they were installed using the cmd line upon the fresh install of Windows 7
Check integrity of game cache and defrag the game files.
If this fails, redownload the games.

And update to latest driver on ATI site.

It isn't windows 7 related if it's what I think it is. I've encountered a weirdo issue too with source games, especially L4D and now L4D2 where sometimes at random right when I start or sometimes even randomly in the middle of a game I'll suddenly drop to 20-30FPS when I'm normally getting 60-150FPS.... unplayable. Sometimes it'll last a long time, a whole session, others just a few seconds. It's a glitch somewhere, I got it on Vista AND W7 so it's not W7 only.

Though I'd definitely consider redeleting the local data and re dling.

Have you tried updating your video card drivers?
No.

Delete your drivers, and reinstall them.
Get the GCFscape program, and defrag all your games files
Check your processes, see if something is eating up your resources
If you have a lot of programs auto-starting, Goto Run and type "msconfig" and go to startup. Remove unnecessary items
Check your temps, and see if anything is overheating and throttling
well, i'll be updating my drivers soon when that 4870x2 arrives, but for now i'm going to redownload the my source library. I'm really thinking that when the backup reinstalled from vista to 7, something got lost along the way, or maybe it reorganized them funky. I'll redownload while i'm at work today and see if anything changes.

I'll be sure to post results regardless of how it goes.

As for temps, i'm using CPUID Hardware monitor and getting load temps of 40 C and 50 C for the CPU and GPU, respectively. So i don't think my problem is there...

There is no reason do re-download!!! You're just wasting your time/bandwidth!!

GCFscape will make the files as good as new!

wanna link me to GCFscape?
I did end up redownloading L4D, L4D2, and TF2. You're right, nothing changed and now i'll try this program out.

Alright...

Defragged everything in steam, and validated. I'll be trying it out again in the morning. If it's not this, then it's new driver time...

If you re-downloaded, the program isn't going to do anything. Won't hurt to run it through though. Read this first though! http://developer.valvesoftware.com/w...efragmentation

So i really took a good look at the program last night, probably stayed up too late because of it. The layout of the program, while it could use the love of a graphic designer, isn't too hard to figure out.

I ended up batch defragging the files. Here's what i thought was interesting:

before defrag:
fragmentation report said the newly installed files were 20% fragmented

after defrag with GCFscape:
fragmentation report said the files were now only 0.06% fragmented

Oh, and the games all work marvelously now. Thanks for all the help guys!

+1 reps!
