ATI Radeon HD5970

This time we start a very optimistic note. You probably remember how angry I was at the launch of 5870's. Sample sites were not enough, your timing was terrible, we were angry, etc. Well, down hat in front of the AMD & His Gentlemen, this time things stayed very different. Besides sample sites were on time, their number was at least the number of older publications in Romania. Yes, well, I know that does not mean very much, but when AMD has not less than two sample sites and HIS raises with two, provided we are talking about a very expensive product and we are in Romania, like you grow so little heart in the chest. Okay, now imagine that we have seized on all, not what I mean when you refer to the number of sample sites. However, if in Romania there in the first 4 sample sites Hemlock, my personal stuff gives me hope. Okay, not one to import trucks from Hemlock's starting with today, that still talk about a product with a price on its performance measure, but I hope those fools who will want this beast will have to where a buy will not have to give Acatiste to church or to stand in line to catch a copy. And if we think how beautiful covered market with no less than 5 performance products that address a very large range of customers, in less than two months, then that white ball is actually a very large Bilo. Well done AMD!

note: site is slow, probably getting many hits at this time.

Good overclocking in this review. Can you say 1Ghz!

If I'm not mistaken, Ati gave the card less stock voltage than a 5870, so the card just needed to up the volts to get the clocks up over 800mhz. Correct me if I'm wrong.

apparently this card sports 2x ''cypress XT'' GPUs, the stock clocks for the ''XT'' are (875/5200), so we can assume these are the chips & IC's real clocks...

so hypothetically, this card will outperform the CFX 5870s

I noticed that as well. 1.05v on the core at stock. Very nice.

That whole power limitation on PCIe 1.0 slots or something... They had to down the voltage so it could get enough power from Gen 1 slots. Gen 2 slots should be able to go nuts with the voltage/OCing. You're right though.

I think that's also why there was that 10mhz OCed 5970 from Sapphire.

Yea soda. stock voltage for a 5870 is 1.16v and the 5970 apparently was given 1.05, again most likely to keep it under 300W or close to it.

5850 = 1.089v
5870 = 1.162v
5970 = 1.05v

PCI-E 2.0 slots can provide 150W to the graphics cards. Pci-e 1.x can only provide half that. So...PCI-E 1.x slot (75W) + 6-pin (75W) + 8-pin (150W) = 300W. Hence, the reason ATI underclocked it to be right under the 300W limit. 294W is the max for the 5970, I believe.

So, most people have a pci-e 2.0 slot (and basically everyone who is buying this card does / should) and that means they should have about a good 50W+ of overclocking headroom.

.......my board is pcie 1.1

so that means, i'll be fine at stock speeds..... but it wont clock at all.

there's always something..

you could get a cheap new motherboard with PCI-e 2.0

On topic: There's something that worries me about this card: it is supossed to be faster than the GTX 295 by a large margin, and to be honest, with this review, I haven't seen that. Which means, that Fermi might be much faster than the HD5970...

We'll have to see anyway.

sigh........im gonna be remortgaging my house to grab a 5970 anyway, the thought of then stripping out the board & finding a load more cash to replace it is out of the question..

looks like the 5870 could be taking its place...
