I do know that Company of Heroes works on a LAN with only 1 cd key.....

All games work on lan with any cd key. This guy obviously wants to keep it legal though.
quake 2 anymore is free and excellent. plus there's a few other games you can pick up for nickels or maybe even free. also look at BF2 demo and BF2142 demo. Quake 4 demo works as well if your machiens are beefy enough to run it. Age of Empires 3 demo.
if you get the hint here the key word is demos. not many maps but you can play the game...
Just go on nVIdia.com and download the multiplayer demos
Fear Combat is a full game thats multiplayer and is all free.
something you need to be careful of when having a LAN at school is the violence. When i was in HS I tried having a fundraiser LAN and the teachers in the end wouldn't let me because we were "murdering each other with blood spatting everywhere. we don't think this would be very school appropriate". then i got maddddd, then i pulled out my deag, and I SAID TOM CRUSE COME OUT OF THE CLOSET..........
