Title says it all does anyone still lap there cpu for the flat surfaces and better temps?

Probably after they've smoked too much weed. "Gonna be sooo much cooler maaannnn."
Doesn't using an aftermarket CPU cooler void the warranty?

I've always thought about doing it, but never got around to it.
I dont see the point unless it has a extremely non flat surface. Some say cpus are made to be a slight bit convex/concave. But if it is really off then i would lap that sucker and the heat sink also. At best i heard around 3c improvement

Void the warranty on what? the Cpu or heatsink?

I lapped my old s478 2.6 GHz P4 HT Northwood a few days ago, so yeah, I guess you could say people still do it

However, after lapping it, I though "to hell with it" and removed the IHS before I had even checked the temp difference. DERP.
As s478 IHSs aren't soldered, I didn't damage the core... However, I made a pretty nasty scratch on the chip - so deep, the copper (or whatever that looks like copper) inside it was visible. Long story short - the CPU is bricked.
After reattaching the IHS back on with superglue it makes a very nice keychain accessory, though

The only issue is that the polished copper IHS surface gets dirty real quick.

I lapped my both my old 920 and megahalems. Seen a 6c drop in temps. It took me almost all day. I put on my mp3 player and got it done.

I wonder if I should lap my H70. I heard that can make a huge difference but it's really hard to do.
It seems that the new CPUs don't need much to hit 4 or 5GHz so not much call for lapping.
Yeah I lapped my 980x.
Yes, its left for the daring, but is still bennefitial, and probably always will be. You just have to decide if the 3-8c drop is worth loosing a warranty, and lowering the resale value of the chip..

I personally have done it to almost all of my coolers and cpu's, and probably will continue doing it....

yeah, but they can't tell you installed an aftermarket heatsink...

lapping on the other hand...
I've wasted time lapping a cpu before, I wouldn't bother doing it again, doesn't make enough difference in temps to make up for the time it takes.
If I ever get one where the IHS looks like a mountain range I would RMA it first.
Not only does it affect the warranty, but for newer cpus the resale value drops way off if you ever want to sell it.
People still do it, advantages are negligible.
we're into the stage of processors and heatsinks where your limited more by the voltage than the temps.
