Hi OCN,

My friend has got a problem with his laptop it wont boot into windows in normal or safe mode. He gets a BSOD unmountable boot volume 0x00000ED.

So i thought it would be a quick boot from XP disk and repair the boot sector/mgr from the command prompt/repair console. Only problem is that the repair console isn't detecting his C:\\WINDOWS partition, all i get is just E:\\MININT which is his backup partition. Strange...

Any ideas ???

you need to install windows xp and locate all the hard drive. delete all the partition to get one hard drive. the bsod is probably cause of some sort of bad sector maybe?

Why would another installation of windows pick up the rest of the hard drive if the recover console booting from the windows disk isn't??

Here is something to try. If you have two sticks of memory, only use one. If that one doesn't work, use the other one. I have seen bad memory do some strange thing.

Firstly, unplug the laptop, take out the battery, and ground yourself. Re-seat the RAM and then unplug the HDD and re-plug it. Then put the battery back on and boot it up.

See if it'll boot into Windows or Safe Mode now.

Reformatting is your next option. If still no go, then more than likely the HDD has failed. Time for a new HDD.

When booting up to Win XP you may get a error that reads "Unmountable Boot Volume". This is probably because your boot.ini file is messed up.

So, what do you do about it, panic and try to mount your boot in your computer...... No that is probably not a good idea.

You can boot to the XP cd and when you see the Welcome to setup press the letter R
You will get a dos prompt
Then type "chkdsk /p" without the quotes and hit enter
When that is done type "fixboot" and hit enter
"Y" and enter at the prompt
Then type "exit" and hit enter
The system will now reboot into Windows

If for some reason that don't work for you, you can boot to the recovery console like above and...
Type "chkdsk /r" then enter ** OR chkdsk /p
When done type "exit" and hit enter.
This will take longer, but the system should boot back into Windows.

Spinright and/or norton diskdoctor should help as well.. if you have access to them.

could also be a bad drive. If it isn't WD, I'd test it.

As i said in the op, the problem is that the recover console doesn't detect the Windows installation only the backup partition E:\\MININT. i tried the chkdsk and fixboot stuff but its pointless doing on the backup partition

I'll try the other stuff you guys posted tomorrow its 4am over here, ill post back and let you know the score

This is not a notebook problem. You may get a better response in a different section? I will think if I have an answer. At this point sounds like a fried HDD can't find OS? But that is too easy of an answer I think?
