my mom is looking for a laptop or netbook to take to work and able to use at home as well. She will be doing MS office and facebook lol.

What is your maximum budget?
$400

What country are you in?
USA

What will be the uses of this laptop?
MS office and web browsing

Do you have brand loyalty or care which brands we select for you?
none

What screen size do you require?
less than 14", smaller is better

What screen resolution do you require?
not sure

Are you looking to buy NEW or would refurbished/recertified/used be okay?
NEW

How long should the battery last? (Under optimal conditions, no movies/games/heavy internet)
2 hours+

What games would you like to play with your laptop? And on what settings?
None

What operating system do you need? (if any)
win 7

Is there a certain style of laptop you want? (aluminum, black, gaming, etc.)
any

How much hard drive space do you need?
128gb+

Do you need any special hardware? (blue ray, webcam, specialty ports, etc.)
none

Is there anything else we need to know?

my mom thinks netbooks are "cute" and is interested in that, but she needs to be able to have multiple office applications running, excel word and outlook at the same time. Im not sure a netbook would handle that well? She doesn't do much web browsing aside from facebook and youtube. no gaming. would like to watch DVD's when on the road, external DVD player is fine.

Also, if can do under $400 with less ram, I can get her an upgrade separately.

If she's going to be doing any type of Office work. I would suggest straying away from a netbook. I bought my netbook for doing papers and stuff, and I regret it.

Dell Inspirion 14R.
Comes with an i3 etc.

Customize it & see if you could get it less than 400.

Yeah, from what I remember windows and MSoffice where not good. Switched over to Linux and Libreoffice and laughed at the fact I could do the same things with less lag and b17ching. It's amazing what a change of OS and software can do.

My mom has a Dell Inspiron. Perfect for Office work and such. It came with an I3 processor and a Graphics accelerator thing...but it works pretty good, but along with tax and other fees, it came out to about 570.00. But you can always customize it and possibly get it lower.
